Treat your taste buds with a Shiraz duo of Moss Brothers’ 94pt Fidium from Margaret River’s superb 2020 vintage – a“lovely wine” (Halliday) with spicy, jubey flavours – plus a new arrival from Zonte’s Footstep’s McLaren Vale vineyards. Eat Cake is indulgently generous with dark cherry and hints of chocolate and coffee.
Move on to succulent Grenache, grown on Sevenhill’s Inigo Vineyard and a real beauty, winning Gold and 95pts at the prestigious Halliday Grenache Challenge. Always good too, to welcome a good Aussie Merlot, and Irvine are masters of the grape, making some of the country’s best. Their Gold-medal, 93pt Spring Hill is joyful.
On to Durif, and Sam Trimboli’s bestselling Black Duck is always a delight. Freshly landed Left Bank Petite Sirah is from the Liebich family vineyards and brims with blueberry, black cherry, and spice, we welcome it with open arms, hearts – and mouths! Enjoy huge savings of $340 on this special two case BULK DEAL – and take home a FREE Magnum as well.
Warming Winter Reds 24 bottle BULK DEAL Case contents
Sevenhill was the first winery ever built in the Clare Valley and one of the oldest in Australia. Originally built and run by the Jesuit community here, with monks who had brought their winemaking knowledge and skills to the Clare Valley from their European homes. Today, the experienced and extremely talented winemaker Will Shields is ensuring the reputation of Sevenhill is soaring. This Grenache, grown on their Inigo Vineyard is a real beauty, winning Gold and 95pts at the prestigious Halliday Grenache Challenge, which compares single varietal Grenaches from all over the country.
Matured in American oak, the Black Duck Durif is full bodied and smooth with layers of spicy fruit. It's made by Sam Trimboli, whom many customers will know from his days at Warburn Estate, where he collected hundreds of awards for his legendary skills. During that time he developed an obsession for the obscure Durif, a “stunning little powerhouse grape that develops astounding complexity”, as he describes it. The Durif grapes for this wine come from a small vineyard that Sam helped establish in the 1980s. It’s now at peak maturity. In the 2021, he decided to add a small portion of punchy spice Petit Verdot for extra complexity and dark berry intensity. Perfect with char-grilled steak or strong cheeses, or as a warming glass solo.
In 1962 Alfred Liebich’s love of fishing led him from Barossa, where his family settled in 1852, to the Murray River. His ‘left bank’ vineyards produce plush Petite Sirah (aka Durif) brimming with blueberry, black cherry and spice. This debut vintage has already scooped Gold! "Dark, opaque red with ruby reflections. Generous nose, full of blackcurrant and black cherry aromas. On the palate, moderate tannins, freshness and crisp, clean fruit. Youthful and accessible." (International Challenge Gilbert & Gaillard).
What's with the name? In 1893 a vineyard was planted with Zante currant to produce table grapes for the growing population of Adelaide. In the 1920s the vineyard was replanted with wine producing varieties of Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon which were eventually used to make our first wine. As a tribute to the journey of the grapes in the vineyard (and because you aren't legally allowed to mention a grape variety unless it's contained in the wine) it was decided to change the “A” to an “O” – ZONTE’S – sufficiently similar. Zonte's Footstep was set up in 1999.
An elegant and balanced expression of Margaret River Shiraz. Vibrant red currant and cherry aromas lift from the glass, leading to a palate of juicy sweet red fruits, sweet vanilla, baking spice and a hint of mocha. The Fidium, Moss Brother’s flagship, was matured for 18 months in French oak (30% new). There's plenty of spice here plus a velvety, plush mouthfeel, with fine tannins. Brilliant value here. The lavish Moss Brothers Fidium Shiraz would be perfectly paired with dry-aged wagyu steak and pureed potatoes. " A lovely wine. Jubey" (Erin Larkin, Halliday Wine Companion).
Barossa's Irvine Wines, as thir website proudly proclaims: "was established back in 1983 by a visionary team who succeeded in putting Australian Merlot at the forefront of the world’s very best". The Spring Hill range of wines are from the Eden Valley and crafted with sheer drinkability in mind. This approachable 2020 Merlot has a Gold and scores of 93 and 92pts to its name.
