Beyond the Labels
If your Mum is a lover of delicious reds, then do her a favour and send this delicious 6-bottle collection her way. (Along with the chocolates and flowers, of course.) Mum deserves the best! There’s a gorgeous Shiraz, fine Cabernets from Greg Follett of Lake Breeze fame and Angove, the silky Paxton McLaren Vale AAA Shiraz Grenache, the very stately Marauding Vintners McLaren Vale Governor General Grenache – and more.
This classy, smooth as silk Cabernet hails from the famous soils of Langhorne Creek. Hurry to reserve your share of this tiny volume red. Dark crimson in the glass, with enticing aromas of blackberry, ripe red cherry, red capsicum and fresh herbs. Hints of dark chocolate sit on the back palate and run to a long, smooth, complex finish. No need to cellar (though you can, for another 3 years or so if you like). It's drinking beautifully now. "Nose of black fruit, combined with stone fruit, a vegetal touch and noble minerality. Fleshy, silky and remarkably well structured on the palate. A success to be enjoyed with a nice piece of meat... 91pts... Double Gold" (Gilbert & Gaillard Wine Judges).
With origins in Spain and southern France, where he still regularly distinguishes himself, this impressive figure first set foot here in 1840 and today also calls South Australia home. The Governor General may have been around a while but has an eye to the future. He mixes effortlessly, but is bold enough to stand alone. Possessed of great potential strength and power, he more often displays his lighter side, with seductive charm and finesse. For many, his approachable style is very refreshing, and even at his most chilled, you’ll always receive a warm welcome.
Black fruit, sweet spice and liquorice make wonderful bedfellows to a blanket of seamlessly integrated tannins. The lengthy flavours lead to a dreamily long finish where vibrant soft fruit makes itself known. Best enjoyed with the classic, rich braised meat of an oxtail stew with a side of crusty bread.
The AAA on the label pays homage to David Paxton’s days in the wool trade and was stamped on the best grades of wool by the Guesser. It is a vibrant blend of Shiraz (55%), Grenache (41%) and Mataro (4%) from special little pockets of the estate. The Shiraz was selected from the ‘Gateway’ and ‘Jones Block’ vineyards, renowned for producing some of the best fruit in the region. These select parcels were blended with complementary Grenache to create a wine that is engaging and approachable. Forest fruits intertwined with raw coffee beans, notes of fresh curry leaves, pine resin and balsamic, along with a feather-light touch of delicate French oak. "cherry, blackberry, dried herbs, floral and bramble. Fleshy and mouthfilling, mid-weight, crunchy red and blue fruits and cedary spice. Firm, chalky tannins and lively acidity rounds the wine out nicel" (Aaron Brasher, The Real Review), Huon Hooke, also in The Real Review adds that it has "good depth and length of flavour. Smart and ageworthy stuff."
5 Red Star Angove is one of Australia's oldest family owned wineries, founded in 1886. They have access to some of the finest fruit in the best reds regions of South Australia. The Angove Bin 4288 Cabernet Sauvignon is exclusively and carefully crafted from grapes grown in the Coonawarra for our customers. The fruit from the 2020 vintage was fantastic – small berries, great fruit concentration and lovely tannins. Warm days and cool nights provided the perfect ripening conditions for Coonawarra’s signature variety, Cabernet Sauvignon. Upon arriving at Angove's 110-year-old winery, the Cabernet grapes were gently destemmed and placed in small open fermenters. Regionally distinctive blackcurrant, spearmint and eucalypt aromas are followed by a full palate with brooding blackberry fruit and supple, mouth-filling structure. For an added layer of fruit complexity, mocha richness and overall elegance, the winemakers blended in a tiny portion (7%) of McLaren Vale Cabernet Sauvignon.
One of our very own team members came up with the concept for this lovely label. The photograph, taken by her father of her stunningly beautiful mother Winsome, is kept in a family album referred to as The Notebook. It's a reminder to never take life too seriously and enjoy every moment. Our newest wine in the range, The Notebook Shiraz, is crafted to leave complicated at the door – a full expression of dark fruits and spice with a hint of vanilla. Share it around over a plate of pasta, crusty bread and let summer take its course.
