Jim Brand was a deeply passionate Coonawarra winemaker and vigneron who was born into the third generation of an Australian winemaking dynasty. Today, the family continue Jim’s legacy by crafting premium Coonawarra wines which reflect Jim Brand's drive, passion and endless pursuit for quality. The striking 93pt Yates Chardonnay is the perfect example of well known Cabernet regions, like Coonawarra, being home to equally impressive Chardonnay. A perfumed nose combines peach and stone fruit aromas with creamy buttery and vanillin oak characters. The palate is complex, smooth and rounded with a balanced acid structure. It displays strong peach and nectarine accompanied by creamy cashew nuts from barrel fermentation and maturation. Lingering fruit flavours last well after the last sip. "Elegant and stylish, the inviting bouquet shows ripe apricot, lemon pith, nougat and roasted cashew aromas, followed by a beautifully weighted palate displaying refined texture backed by bright acidity. Splendidly harmonious with complexity, offering fabulous drinking... 93pts" (Sam Kim, Wine Orbit).
Thistledown was started by friends Giles Cooke and Fergal TynanIn, who had met when studying for the Masters of Wine exams. In their fun-loving 92pt Thistledown Cloud Cuckoo Land, Italian varietals from the Riverland come together in harmony. A vibrant, textural white with hints of almond blossom, quince and ripe pear, it's tangy, almost exotic, but pithy and delicious. It makes a great aperitif – Ned Goodwin MW in The Halliday Wine Companion asks if it might be "the best in the country?".
Charleston in Adelaide Hills is the location of Howard Vineyard's rolling 36-hectare Beautiful Valley Vineyard. They grow a many varietals here, but their best Sauvignon Blanc comes from 'Block Q'. The cool nights lock in great natural acidity and the warm days give lovely slow ripening conditions, all making the fruit vibrant and fresh. Howard Vineyard have crafted it into an attractive single vineyard wine – all free run juice, cold fermented. Ned Goodwin MW in Halliday Wine Companion notes its “ length and lingering succulence... 91pts. Great Value" and in The Real Review, Stuart Knox calls it "A very refreshing and classic example of the variety... 90pts”.
It has been 90+ score after 90+ score for the 2022 vintage of Jellicoe Eden Valley Riesling. A concentrated palate with lime, sorbet and crunchy apple flavours. Serve chilled with barbequed scallops or King George Whiting. "Focused, true … lovely to drink" writes Dave Brookes in the Halliday Wine Companion. Sam Kim from Wine Orbit also gives it 95pts, calling it "… elegant, the wine shows lemon sorbet, lime cordial and crunchy apple nuances on the nose, leading to a concentrated palate displaying fine texture and stunning persistency. Superbly structured and lingering."
Howard Vineyard's cool-climate wines are really making a splash, and this vintage Sparkling – made with top quality Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from their Beautiful Valley and Charleston vineyards – is a tongue-tingling, nose-prickling, palate-pleasing delight. Vibrant raspberry, cherry and strawberry from the Pinot Noir greet your palate upfront. Soon to be followed by green apple, citrus and peach notes from the Chardonnay. which also offers texture and nutty flavour to the wine. This beautiful bubbly finishes fresh and dry with a hint of creaminess. Perfect for celebrations, it also makes a wonderful accompaniment to richly flavoured foods like lobster mornay or a gruyere soufflé.
Gold, a score of 95pts – plus a special recognition for value from the Halliday Wine Companion three years running, attests to the quality of this luscious Pinot Gris seem . The Delatite team use only natural yeasts to ferment their wines and this, and other biodynamic approaches, are resulting in consistently excellent whites in particular. This has luscious, pear, peach and blossom notes but with a lovely line of acidity that keeps it fresh, revealing the varital's 'rich inner beauty' (Jeni Port, the Halliday Wine Companion).
A secret mix, in an ancient practice, of co-harvesting and blending in the field. Co-fermenting rather than post blending, allows the fruits flavours to develop in synergy, resulting in a naturally harmonious wine. Expect tropical fruits and citrus aromas with lifted white flowers. Slippery and lasting on the palate, it delivers a luscious fruit expression of pear, citrus and fresh pineapple. A voluptuous wine and a mighty match for hard cheeses.
