Start in the North with a velvety Veronese star, then head to Tuscany for the bestselling Saracosa, a ‘Super Tuscan’ from the great Barbanera family. There’s a charming Montepulciano d’Abruzzo too, full of spicy fruit. Then, visit sun-drenched Puglia in Italy’s boot for a luscious Primitivo from our good friend Scipione Giulani and his much loved Papavero label, and Sicily for a deeply delicious high-grown Nero d’Avola and an exciting Frappato, 100% organic and bubbling over with juicy red cherry fruit – these are must-haves!
In 1968 western Sicily was rocked by an earthquake. Such was the devastation, residents of Poggioreale had no choice but to abandon their properties and rebuild further down the hill. Whole settlements became ghost towns overnight. This included Dino’s grandfather’s Nero d’Avola vineyards. 50 years on, Dino set out to recover his grandfather’s lost plot of land. He found it wild and uncultivated, yet producing jewel-like grapes with amazing flavour. In 2017 he made his first ‘revived’ vintage which proved a sensation with customers. It's pure Nero d’Avola, a Sicilian grape, fast becoming a fashionable pick in smart restaurants. Dino’s creation is packed with rich black fruits and spice. A top choice with sausage casserole.
If you enjoy the food-friendly reds of northern Italy, especially the Valpolicella Ripasso style, you'll love this. We have worked with Italian Winery of the Year Cantina di Negrar for years. They own a vineyard in the Marano Valley and they’ve offered us a deal on their Rosso Veronese – a wine usually reserved for their Italian fans. It’s named after Bartolomeo Lorenzi, whose epic 18th-century poem of rural life made Valpolicella wines famous the world over. The Marano Valley is especially cool, so grapes take longer to ripen, which adds depth, character and freshness to the wines. Also included is a dash of dark Amarone. With black cherry fruit and Christmas cake spice, it’s hard to imagine a more appealing Veronese red. Great with game.
We first met Dino when he began restoring his grandfather's earthquake-struck vineyard, high in the Sicilian hills. You loved the wine it made - Tenuta Fenice. Not one to rest on his laurels, he's started another ambitious new project called w/o - wine made without compromise. He chose native Frappato as his champion, all grown organically thanks to Sicily's warm, dry climate and Dino's diligence. It's bottled in 100% recycled glass too, known as 'wild' glass. You may notice a little variation in colour, perhaps a few tiny bubbles. All part of the charm, as is the delicious red berry and cherry fruit that greets you on the aroma and continues through on the bright, juicy palate. Try chilled solo, or with pizza or pesto pasta.
Montepulciano is the top red grape of Italy’s Abruzzo, in La Chiamata showing off all its deliciously silky, ripe red fruit and juicy plum charm. And this has just won 90pts: “An inviting and generous example, full of succulent black fruit, backed by notes of cinnamon and vanilla spice. Polished tannins and attractive, balanced acidity make for a very enjoyable wine” - IWSC.
It’s no coincidence the Papavero family of wines are amongst our customers’ favourites – winemaker Scipione Giuliani always manages to capture the very essence of the grape, the spirit of Italy and a delicious drinkability. This is the granddaddy of the group, made purely from Primitivo from a plot of 50-year-old vines, resulting in very concentrated flavour. Scipione discovered the vines in Puglia, and insisted that the grapes be bottled solo. To match the richness of the fruit he aged the wine in barrel for a few months, lending it mellow roundness and complexity. ll Papavero Primitivo is a weighty red, best served with similarly hearty food. Enjoy with spaghetti with tomato, garlic and basil sauce, or with roast meats or pork casserole.
Saracosa is inspired by the ‘Super Tuscans’ – a style first developed by Antinori in the 1970s. These wines kick started the region’s renaissance and became some of the most exclusive and expensive in the world. Saracosa is from the Barbanera family estate, overlooked by the Saracosa hill near Montalcino. Half the vineyards are in the Vino Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG, and the remainder just beyond. In the fine 2019 vintage Saracosa’s old vines delivered exceptional concentration. The fruit was then part-aged in French oak barriques to lend a toasty layer of complexity. Dense, dark cherry and chocolatey tones make this a serious choice for pasta with pork ragù or bistecca alla fiorentina (steak with cannellini beans in tomato sauce).
