Beyond the Labels
Treat yourself to rich, satisfying Shiraz in McLaren Vale’s mighty Deep River and a 93pt Barossa Valley beauty from Château Tanunda. Stay in the Barossa for the excellent Double-Gold Shiraz Cabernet blend from Catch 22. Tahbilk’s 91pt pure Cabernet is “bright and balanced” (Halliday), and in describing the exceptional Bull Ant Cabernet Merlot from Lake Breeze, Tony Love suggests it would be hard to “find a red wine of better value across the land”. Lastly, there’s vibrant Adelaide Hills Tempranillo in Geoff Hardy’s K1. Take one bottle of each and save $49.
You can’t be a winemaker until you get experience, but you can’t get experience until you make wine. Enter the Catch-22 project! It’s run by an established and highly acclaimed winemaker who teaches fledgling young winemakers how to craft quality wines. The Gold & Double Gold for this suggest he's doing a very good job. He encourages innovation and experimentation and thrives on the new ideas that flow freely from these aspiring winemakers. Here they have crafted a new take on an Australian classic, blending Barossa Valley's famously ripe and peppery Shiraz with the region's rich and intense blackcurrant and bayleaf Cabernet. A treat with stewed meats and mash.
Geoff Hardy’s great-great-grandfather, the original Thomas Hardy, first planted grapes in SA in the 1850s and was one of the founding fathers of the Australian wine industry. In 1980, Geoff left the then family company, Thomas Hardy & Sons, to make his own way. This Tempranillo comes from his K1 vineyard in the Kuitpo region. Often called the 'noble grape' of Spain and a key player in Rioja wines, Tempranillo earned its name from its early ripening nature, and this is the first red from the estate to be bottled each year. Raspberry flavours and a hint of licorice.
Shiraz is the most widely planted grape in the McLaren Vale. Indeed, along with the Barossa, it produces some of Australia’s finest Shiraz. All deliciously ripe black fruits perfectly balanced by a seam of freshness, thanks to cooling coastal winds. We reserve our Deep River label for fabulous one-off parcels our buyer out there, Dan Parrott, gets to hear about and snaps up when the offer is good. This is a knockout red blended from a trio of exceptional McLaren Vale vineyards. Traditionally fermented, this Shiraz is dense with gorgeous layers of ripe blackberry, dark cherry and juicy plum fruit, layered with the vanilla spice from gentle oak-ageing. The ideal red to pull out for a Sunday roast, a hearty lasagne but keep a few for barbecues in Summer.
Over 160 years of winemaking history underpins Tahbilk and their historic cellars. Tahbilk is a founding member of Australia’s First Families of Wine and they took out the Halliday Wine Companion’s Winery of the Year 2016. The Estate Cabernet is one of their most popular wines and consistently scores well into the 90s year after year – this 2018 is " bright and balanced… Terrific value... " says Jeni Port in the Halliday Wine Companion.
From Lake Breeze, Halliday Wine Companion's 'Best Value Winery of the Year 2022'. They also dominate year after year at the Langhorne Creek Wine Show as the Gold medal will attest. The grapes for the Bullant Cabernet Merlot were selected from old vines in the famous wine district of Langhorne Creek. Dark, sweet Cabernet fruit flavours with a warm heart of Merlot. The value here just can't be beat.
A lavishly rich and grand Gold-medal 93pt Barossa Shiraz from ‘the birthplace of the Barossa' as Château Tanunda has been called. It was established in 1890 and is the site of some of the Valley’s first vines planted as well as its first winery. After falling into decline, John Geber, who has owned it since 1998, has restored both the impressive winery building and the estate’s reputation. It truly is grand. And so are its wines – taste this inky black and intense Shiraz beauty and see. Lifted aromas of blackberry, plum, olive and black pepper are accompanied by spicy, dark berry fruits on the palate. The finish is long and silky with fine tannins. 18 months maturation in a combination of French and American oak barrels. The tannins are slowly softening thanks to time in bottle. Gold at Berliner Wine Trophy and 93pts from Wine Orbit!
