“Is Chardonnay the world’s most popular white wine? The numbers seem to say yes…” So says the great James Halliday – and judging from our own observations, we’d have to agree! It’s a very versatile white perfect for all occasions, and a delicious partner to weightier dishes that Autumn brings with the cooler weather. Taste top drops from top names like Angove, Mountadam, TarraWarra, The Black Pig and more in this dazzling collection.
With over 130 years of expertise under the family’s belt, Angove have plenty of experience to call upon. In recent years they have been awarded ‘Winery of the Year’ and many medals besides for individual wines. Today, fifth-generation Victoria and Richard Angove run the business, while Sophie Angove oversees viticulture, at the cellar that Dr William Angove started in 1886 near Adelaide (by making award winning brandy – a product they’re still famous for). The new generation continue to pioneer modern styles of wine with a focus on sustainability. Having long since moved away from the weighty, golden, heavily oaked Chardonnays of last century, this beauty embraces bright stone fruit, shot through by lemony brilliance. No wonder the great Chardonnay grape is back in favour.
Inspired by a rag-tag bunch of kids who turned the streets and vineyards of Coonawarra into an endless bike park in the 1980s. A 5000-acre playground with no out of bounds, no helmets and no limits. The ride only ending once the street lights were lit. Whether Sam Brand was a bit of a BMX bandit himself, we're not sure, but he has certainly created a Chardonnay that will get your wheels turning. "It's elegantly expressed on the nose showing crunchy apple, grapefruit, nougat and roasted cashew aromas, leading to a finely flowing palate offering creamy texture and juicy fruit flavours backed by bright acidity. Delightfully restrained and harmonious with a lengthy linear finish... 92pts" (Sam Kim, Wine Orbit).
Chardonnay lovers, here's a treat from the famous Black Pig. The team has sourced top notch Chardonnay fruit from sunny South Australian to create this cracking white. Chill it well, then sip on it all summer long. Crisp, bright and packed with stone fruit flavours, it's one you'll want to keep in your fridge for impromptu dinners out at your favourite BYO, or as a cheeky accompaniment to a takeaway. Or just to sip on its own – the light bright flavours make it very nice for relaxed summer sipping.
Established in 1972, Mountadam High Eden Estate is one of Australia’s oldest cool climate Chardonnay vineyards. Situated on a unique rocky outcrop the estate commands an easterly aspect 500-550m high over Eden Valley. On release the wine is pale straw in colour. It displays classic Chardonnay characters of peach, nectarine and fresh figs. French oak barrel fermentation and maturation gives the wine secondary aromas of cashew nuts and mixed spices. The palate has a complex mix of peach, citrus, cashew nuts, subtle truffle and spice characters throughout.
Andrew McPherson grew up in the world of wine and went on to work for some top names in Australia before setting up his own independent winery. McPherson Wines have cemented themselves a reputation for quality, efficiency and innovation. For a top twenty Aussie winery, they certainly fly under the radar, but that's the way they like it. It allows winemaker Jo Nash and her team to focus on what really matters – making sophisticated wines like The Full Fifteen Chardonnay. It tastes just as good as (if not better) than many Chardonnays twice the price. A small amount of fermentation in oak has lent The Full Fifteen Chardonnay lovely toasty nuances, a nutty complexity and a soft creamy character. Enjoy it with creamy chicken and a side of charred broccolini.
It didn't take much encouragement from Yarra Valley winemaker Dr John Middleton to convince TarraWarra Estate's Marc and Eva Besen to plant their first 6 hectares of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir back in 1983. Their love of Burgundian wines also played a part. Today, a beautiful cellar door and restaurant stand on the property amid 28 hectares of vines, an extensive nature reserve, cattle grazing and a kitchen garden. The Chardonnay was selected from seven separate blocks across the property, and boasts great intensity of stone fruit flavour, a touch of citrus and underlying cashew nut flavours. Creamy texture and subtle use of oak leading to a fresh, lingering finish. A well-deserved 95pt score the result – this is a treat!
