Take a world wine Autumn tour with these delicious international reds – no passport required! Start in France’s prestige Bordeaux region with the impressive Reboul Salze, and then drop down to the sun-blessed south for the bestselling Rex Mundi Shiraz Grenache – a wickedly delicious Languedoc treat. Head to Italy for a star Chianti from Paoli Masi and the great Scipione Giuliani’s much-loved Il Papavero, then to Spain for a gloriously velvety drop from Valencia, eight years old and drinking beautifully now. Last, from Argentina, get stuck into the fabulous T-Bone Malbec from San Juan – the perfect partner (you guessed it!) to a sizzling steak.
Introducing Il Papavero – a delicious Italian red showing loads of charisma and style. Blended from the best grapes of the vintage, it offers supple, ripe fruit and easy charm. Only the most flavoursome grapes from the best performing vineyards go into this wine. With fresh and fruity berry aromas and irresistible value, Il Papavero is the perfect match to your favourite pizza or pasta.
This irresistible black beauty is made from fabulously intense Shiraz and Grenache grapes grown on the craggy hillsides of France’s deep south – the Languedoc-Roussillon. Look up from the vines and you will see ruins of castles perching precariously on rocky peaks. This inhospitable landscape and these ancient strongholds were home to medieval Cathars who lived in awe of the evil god Rex Mundi (‘King of the World’). He corrupted the faithful with promises of earthly pleasures and the forbidden delights of mortal flesh. But behind the wine is a very kind soul - Hervé Sabardeil, our ‘King of the Black Reds’. Don’t even try to resist the temptation of this red, just sip and enjoy its marriage of liquorice-scented Shiraz and luscious Grenache. "Expressive nose combining red fruits, mixed spices, plum and smoke. Deliciously perfumed attack followed by a lovely joyful yet solid palate with a full-on duo of fruit and spices. A merry southern wine for barbecues" (Gilbert & Gaillard).
As Robert Parker says, “Spain leads the world for sensational wine bargains of character and soul”, none more so than its mature reds. Nowhere else produces mellow, barrel-aged wines of such remarkable quality and price. Take Palacio del Conde – a gorgeously complex, oaky 2016 from Valencia. Part of this region is close to the coast, while the more southerly part is inland, up in the hills, and dry. It’s there that winemaker Marta Martínez selects the finest, hand harvested – from 50 year old vines – Tempranillo grapes for this Gran Reserva, then ages the wine for three years in oak barrels. A wonderfully fragrant, silky red with mature redcurrant and strawberry fruit and a rich, toasty character. Sublime with roast lamb or tapas.
Christophe Reboul Salze is a big name in Bordeaux. Born in central France, he fell in love with the region's wines in his youth. Arriving in Bordeaux in 1980, he decided to make his passion a career. He gained a decade's experience trading in Grand Cru Classé wines and became director at one of the leading houses. Then started his own négociant business, which remains today a leader in the field. However, he wanted to make wine too, so he purchased three estates in the Right Bank's Premières Côtes de Blaye. He employed Stéphane Derenoncourt as consultant and the results have been exceptional. This superb claret uses a cuvée from his properties, Châteaux Les Grands Marechaux, Gigault and Belle Coline. A fine red exclusive to our customers.
Pure Argentinian magic lies in this inky black red – a wine for the meat-lovers among you. And non-carnivores too! It comes from an award-winning winery in San Juan, a lesser-known region in the north, making impressive wines. Crafted by a winemaker of 35 years' experience, Gino Santinon, this juicy red leads with Argentina’s star red grape, Malbec, with a dash of Cabernet. Gino uses grapes from high-altitude slopes, up to 764 metres altitude. At these lofty heights the grapes bathe in glorious sunlight but are kept cool at night. The result is brilliantly fresh fruit with perfect velvety-smooth ripeness that you can enjoy in the T-Bone. Packed with rich damson, plum and blueberry flavours, it'll make you want to slap a steak on the barbie.
We've worked closely with the Masi family in Tuscany's superb Rufina district for 30 years now, first with Renzo and now with his son, Paolo. They are like family. In fact, you may well have met Paolo and his wife Anna Rita at our wine shows. They come every year. Paolo took over the family estate in 1990 having passed his wine studies top of the class. And that talent shows in every one of his wines. Their beautiful property lies high on a hill overlooking the Argomenna valley – it's a prime spot for Sangiovese, placed on a par with Chianti Classico since the 18th century. One of his wines even won '3rd Best Wine of Italy' in 2020 and 2021. Enjoy the cherry fruit and silky texture of his great-value Chianti – ideal with chicken or pasta.
