Fire up the BBQ – these reds are made for sizzling, smoky fare. Fire up the BBQ – these reds are made for sizzling, smoky fare. And look at the price – an impressive $13.99 a bottle! Highlights include Bill Calabria’s punchy The Boxer Durif, Russell & Suitor’s juicy Franca’s Vineyard Grenache, the Double Gold-winning Catch 22 Barossa Valley Shiraz Cabernet, a lavish Margaret River Red dazzling with high points and Gold – and more.
You can’t be a winemaker until you get experience, but you can’t get experience until you make wine. Enter the Catch-22 project! It’s run by an established and highly acclaimed winemaker who teaches fledgling young winemakers how to craft quality wines. He encourages innovation and experimentation and thrives on the new ideas that flow freely from these aspiring winemakers. Here they have crafted a new take on an Australian classic, blending Barossa Valley's famously ripe and peppery Shiraz with the region's rich and intense blackcurrant and bayleaf Cabernet. A treat with stewed meats and mash.
It’s wine like this, made using fruit from premium sites throughout the region, that makes South Australia a first choice destination for lovers of big, generous and velvety Aussie reds – consider it the state’s great gift to the wine world, not just at home but all over the globe. The Old Red River Gum Cabernet Shiraz flows with distinctive black fruit, eucalypt and spice, smoothed out by delicious dark chocolate and a touch of smoky oak. Winner of a Double Gold medal at an international wine competition in France. Enjoy it with a rib eye or sip it solo with a beautiful vista.
Sourced from Juniper Estate's Wilyabrup vineyard, Metricup site and Karridale vineyard, all of which are sustainably farmed following organic practices. Winner of a Gold medal and scoring 95pts at Royal Melbourne, the Crossing Original Red displays aromas of raspberry, redcurrant and cherry with a lick of cassis and a red liquorice twist. Oak contributes subtle cedar and vanilla hints. Medium to full-bodied and silky in the mouth – the palate is driven by bright, juicy red fruits and a hint of dark chocolate. Impeccably balanced acid, discreet oak, glossy tannins and remarkable length. " Compelling!... 90pts. Value Star" (Erin Larkin, Halliday Wine Companion).
A memorable Durif, awash with lush black fruit and spice that comes in an appropriately distinctive bottle. Bill Calabria has won Trophy after Trophy for his wines – including the prestigious Stoddart. He has been on a short list for the Jimmy Watson Award at least twice, His ‘3 Bridges’ alone has been recognised at the Sydney International Wine Competition, as ‘Most Successful Winery or Brand'… he’s been praised by Robert Parker and Halliday who’s placed four wines within his 1001 Top Wines. He was a local boxing champion as a teenager, winning 12 out of 13 fights (with seven KOs) before his mum found out and put a stop to it. “I made a lot of friends out of boxing,” he says. It’s given him rare opportunities including sparring with the Australian champion, and has also come in handy in other ways. A few years ago he confronted three men who’d come to the winery to steal wine. After they started throwing punches Bill fought back, literally knocked some teeth out, and they fled empty handed. This is an unashamedly weighty, full flavoured red with masses of lush black fruit, spice, liquorice and herbal hints and a toasty oak finish.
The Heartland story began in the late 1990s when winemaker Ben Glaetzer became excited about the outstanding quality of fruit being grown in some of South Australia’s lesser-known regions, in particular Langhorne Creek. Together with industry veterans, Scott Collett, Grant Tilbrook and more recently Nick Keukenmeester, they grew Heartland into an award-winning winery. In their velvety 93pt Heart & Soil Shiraz, a depth of black forest fruit and cassis is framed by the vanilla and Christmas spices of judiciously used French and American oak. Expect soft tannins and a lingering finish. "Richly fruited and instantly appealing, the wine shows blackberry, vanilla, mixed spice and toasted nut aromas, followed by a generously expressed palate offering succulent fruit flavours with silky texture and fine-grained tannins. Plump and velvety, making it highly enjoyable... 93pts" (Sam Kim, Wine Orbit).
Alex Russell is turning out some exceptional wines under his Russell & Suitor label. The reds are juicy, delicious and quite moreish, much like the Franca's Vineyard Grenache. It's from the Riverland, with just the right amount of sunshine for this thin-skinned varietal to tan its way to aromatic red fruit bliss. Beautiful aromas of strawberry, red cherry and spice are reflected on the palate and carry it through to a lovely, textured finish. A terrific long lunch wine.
