The original black pig was named Tanuki. He was a cheeky little pork chop. So loved was he by his winemaking owner, it was only right we honoured this special pig with a wine of his own. Produced from hand-selected fruit from top McLaren Vale vineyards, The Black Pig Shiraz leaps from the glass with sumptuous, rich and ripe blackcurrant tones and vanilla snippets. Oozing lashings of cedar, ripe berries and hints of chocolate this stunning Gold-winning Shiraz is the kind of wine that can drink now with ease, or be laid down for another 8 or so years. The Governor General may have been around a while but has an eye to the future. He mixes effortlessly, but is bold enough to stand alone. Possessed of great potential strength and power, he more often displays his lighter side, with seductive charm and finesse. For many, his approachable style is very refreshing, and even at his most chilled, you’ll always receive a warm welcome.

Established in 1860 and run continuously by the Purbrick family since 1925, Tahbilk is regarded as one of Victoria’s best producers of cool-climate Cabernet and Shiraz. You’ll find a delicious blend of blackberries, blueberries and vanilla here. Herbal and cedar hints from time spent in American and French oak taking that complexity further, with savoury tannins on the finish giving structure. Jeni Port in the Halliday Wine Companion calls it a "classic in many ways", and Huon Hook in The Real Review points out its "spicy and meaty nuances … delicious flavour and mouth-feel, plenty of extract, generous fluffy tannins and a long long finish. This one comes from the makers of our bestselling Black Pig. Indeed, the piglets on the label are the descendents of the original Black Pig, Tanuki, and still roam the paddocks today. The rich and ripe 16 Little Black Pigs Shiraz is filled with plum, blackberry and cherry flavours with hints of black pepper and eucalypt. This is a wine that you can drink on its own but will be equally good with food.

Wine Summary

From a 25 year old single vineyard in southern Coonawarra where lower yields lead to gorgeous levels of flavour concentration. Dark blackberry and black cherry fruit aromatics, along with hints of dried mint, violet florals and some dark chocolate… the palate shows a richness of dark berry and cherry fruits, along with earthy toasted spice characters. The wine shows good structure, with fine elegant tannins and a lingering finish. “It's gorgeously composed and expressed with cassis, vanilla, roasted hazelnut and subtle tobacco aromas, followed by a wonderfully flavoursome palate delivering excellent weight and persistency. Beautifully framed by layers of fine tannins, offering both structure and impressive length... 95pts" (Sam Kim, Wine Orbit).
