Star with two lavish Gold-medal Bordeaux, decadently layered and complex, then head to the Rhone’s Vaucluse for a Gold-medal Grenache shining with bright fruit. Then, drop down to the sun-blessed south for the wonderful Pensée de Gassac from an estate known as “the one First Growth of the Languedoc" (Hugh Johnson), a lovely Syrah Grenache Mourvèdre from Fitou, and the bestselling Gold-medal Le XV du President 2021, a power-packed Grenache favourite our customers adore.
Bruno Dellac’s wines are no stranger to Gold medals, winning them for most vintages since 2010. His family estate lies in Castillon, on the Right Bank, near Saint-Emilion and the Côtes de Francs. Vines planted 30 years ago are now producing grapes of superb intensity, especially thanks to the cool calcaire soils (the same as you’ll find in much of Saint-Emilion). Good drainage makes vines struggle to find nutrients and the result is more mineral complexity and flavour in the Merlot-rich wine. And such is Bruno’s dedication to perfection that since 2010 he has turned over his vineyards to organic viticulture, now with certification. Silky red fruit with structure and freshness – open early to let its flavours unfurl; pretty redcurrant and floral notes with a hint of cigar box. Serve with roast meats.
With Gold medals galore, Thierry Ferlay has made wine all over the world but remains fondest of the warm, ripe reds of the southern Rhône. He also adores their chief grape, Grenache – the most important variety in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. In fact he’s in charge of winemaking at this renowned appellation’s only co-operative winery, where all the growers are part-owners of the enterprise. Naturally, maximising quality is at the forefront of their minds, which explains this wine’s exceptional flavour and value. Made purely from Grenache, it has irresistible raspberry fruit, hints of spice and a peppery edge. Enjoy with ratatouille, lamb chops and homemade burgers. And because it’s so smooth and not too heavy, it’s ideal sipping on its own, too.
Le XV is known to thousands as our ‘King of the Big Reds’. It owes its intensity to Grenache from vines, some over 100 years old, that grow on the rocky slopes of the Pyrenean foothills in the Montagne Noire and yield only tiny quantities of grapes. Le XV also benefits from the painstaking care of self-confessed southern French wine aficionado Mark Hoddy, whose draconian selection process sees him earmark in advance every vineyard he intends to harvest and micro-manage every stage of the winemaking. This takes time, but you can taste the result in every delicious glass! Richly textured, with layers of ripe bramble fruit kept smooth by warming alcohol and soft, ripe tannins, this is a red to enjoy with roast lamb, steak or a hearty stew.
Fitou is one of the top appellations of the Languedoc, with red wines that are hugely appealing with their rich, ripe fruit and authentic taste of the herbal garrigue. Our buyer, Mark Hoddy, lives close by, always on hand to check out any great discoveries. This is one from the Dellova family and their 40-hectare estate, which they've owned since 1971. They proudly began organic conversion in 2009, gaining full status in 2012. Brothers Thierry and André are today in charge, nurturing the vines in the dry, ocean-breeze-swept terroir of La Palme. This fabulous, silky, intensely flavoured 2019 is a blend of Syrah, Grenache and Mourvèdre, heaped with heady black fruits and spice. Perfect for baked aubergine and tomato or grilled meats.
Christophe Reboul Salze is a big name in Bordeaux. Born in central France, he fell in love with the region's wines in his youth. Arriving in Bordeaux in 1980, he decided to make his passion a career. He gained a decade's experience trading in Grand Cru Classé wines and became director at one of the leading houses. Then started his own négociant business, which remains today a leader in the field. However, he wanted to make wine too, so he purchased three estates in the Right Bank's Premières Côtes de Blaye. He employed Stéphane Derenoncourt as consultant and the results have been exceptional. This superb claret uses a cuvée from his properties, Châteaux Les Grands Marechaux, Gigault and Belle Coline. A fine red exclusive to our customers.
Since Samuel Guibert returned from 7 years' experience winemaking in New Zealand, he's been reinvigorating his family's already exceptional estate with new ideas. His parents Aimé and Véronique founded the property in the late '60s. Former glovemakers to royalty, they discovered from a friend, the emininent Henry Enjalbert, that they had chosen an amazing site for their vineyards, with the potential to make magnificent Grand Cru style wines. Formed over thousands of years by slowly shifting glaciers, the poor, well drained soils are perfect for vines. History has shown this prognosis to be correct and Gassac is now known as the one true ‘Grand Cru’ of the south. Pensée is a real taste of the Languedoc – ripe black herbal fruit and tobacco spice.
