Beyond the Labels
In the Premium Exclusives, you’ll find a superb Shiraz quartet, made up of Elderton’s stunning Barossa beauty, East Wing, Chapel Hill’s impressive The Prophet (on Double Gold-winning form), Tyrrell’s The Blacksmith’s Hut from their vineyards in Heathcote, and boasting the region’s characteristic white pepper edge, plus Redman’s hugely popular ‘Bill & Arthur’ from Coonawarra. There’s straight Cabernet out of Coonawarra too in the intriguingly named Catbird Seat from RedHeads, and a rich and fragrant McLaren Vale Cab Shiraz combination from the excellent Coriole. Save $204 for the dozen, but do check out our Exclusives BULK DEAL for MASSIVE savings and a FREE bottle.
The Bill & Arthur is named after two pioneering and well-regarded Coonawarra local legends and, we are delighted to tell you, that in the glass, this special exclusive is deep, dark and downright delicious. Drawn from the 1890s heritage row and other Redman vineyards with an average vine age of about 50 years, the Bill & Arthur stands as a classic Coonawarra Shiraz: medium-bodied, with a richness of fruit that ripens at a lower alcohol level than typical Barossa and McLaren Vale Shiraz. Hand-plunged and basket-pressed, the 2021 exhibits generous blackcurrent, violet and bramble aromas, leading to a savoury flavor profile with a touch of pepper and Chinese five-spice playing in the background. Just add barbequed ribeye with black pepper sauce. Dan Redman describes the 2021 vintage as one of Coonawarra’s best. Matured in aged American and French oak for about 12 months. Will cellar for 5 to 10 years but ready for immediate drinking pleasure.
"Coriole has earned its reputation as one of the blue-blood producers of McLaren Vale” (James Halliday). "What Coriole does better than any other McLaren Vale maker is to fashion wines of such balance and finesse ... equipped with the structure, balance and layers of fruit to unfold slowly” (Jeremy Oliver). We're not arguing with these fine critics! Clark Hill, named after the land on which the Coriole estate was built, is an impressively rich blend of lush Cabernet planted in 1988, and spicy Shiraz planted in 1969 when Coriole was set up. Savour subtle lavendar aromas and a melee of plum, cassis and redcurrant flavours lifted by elegant, exotic spice.
Tyrrell's is one of the most famous names in Australian wine. Founded in 1858 in the Hunter Valley, five generations later they still produce some of the country's finest wines. They are renowned for the world's best Semillon and produce many other wines with legendary status. Their list of awards includes Australia’s Best Winery, Winery of the Year 2010, Winemaker of the Year twice in 2004 and in 2009, 14 out of 19 Trophies at the Sydney Show and many more! In 1994 they made their first foray into Heathcote. The excellent structure and white pepper lift of this red are thanks to the ancient Cambrian soils, unique to this area. With firm structure, dense fruit and supple smokiness from 18 months in oak, it's best decanted early or cellared.
“The founding Ashmead family continues to impress with their wines … elegance and balance are key” (Halliday). Generous and exclusive Shiraz fromBarossa Valley's iconic Elderton Wines. Lifted aromas of ripe plums and toasty vanilla lead to silky soft fruit flavours of dark cherries, mulberries, liquorice and dark chocolate. Described by Wine Spectator as one of Australia’s modern classics. Exceptional value.
Michael Fragos grew up in McLaren Vale, and spent 14 years at Tatachilla before taking over at Chapel Hill in 2004. Endless titles and Trophies worldwide followed. A three-time ‘Bushing King’, Michael was named best winemaker on the planet at the world’s biggest wine show and Halliday notes his “wine quality is unfailingly excellent”. This McLaren Vale heavyweight is divinely good and shows Michael’s wonderful handiwork at its very best. It brims with deep blueberry, mocha, dark olive and liquorice with a lovely mouthfeel, the fruit and tannins all in perfectly pitched harmony. Gilbert & Gaillard give it a Double Gold medal; "right ruby colour with a few purple glints. Reserved nose of red fruit, spices and toast. Velvety attack opening onto a heady, full-bodied, firm palate just beginning to reveal its complex range. Hand-crafted, very elegant."
This is a cracking new release from RedHeads, a leading eco-friendly boutique winery in Oz. The winery was started in 2002 in the McLaren Vale - a cellar where young winemakers could come in their spare time and make just the sort of small scale wine they dreamed of. Since then, the winery has put down real roots in the Barossa, very nearly 100% off-grid, thanks to its solar panels, and nearly self sufficient on recycled water. There, surrounded by all of the Aussie big players, they rescue small parcels of terrific grapes and make showstopping wines. Catbird Seat is a standout – all the grapes from Jack Burston's cracking Coonawarra vineyard. RedHeads bagged them and has done him proud. Aged a year in French oak, it's a big, bold red.
