Beyond the Labels
As James Halliday says, De Bortoli is “arguably the most successful of all Yarra Valley wineries” and their A5 Vineyard in Dixon’s Creek is one of the oldest Chardonnay blocks in the Valley. The 96pt De Bortoli Section A5 Yarra Valley Chardonnay 2021 (RRP $55) stars in this line-up of four excellent Chardonnays, alongside beauties from Bleasdale (also rated 96pts), Jim Brand, and Dandelion Vineyards.
Jim Brand was a deeply passionate Coonawarra winemaker and vigneron who was born into the third generation of an Australian winemaking dynasty. Today, the family continue Jim’s legacy by crafting premium Coonawarra wines which reflect Jim Brand's drive, passion and endless pursuit for quality. The striking 93pt Yates Chardonnay is the perfect example of well known Cabernet regions, like Coonawarra, being home to equally impressive Chardonnay. A perfumed nose combines peach and stone fruit aromas with creamy buttery and vanillin oak characters. The palate is complex, smooth and rounded with a balanced acid structure. It displays strong peach and nectarine accompanied by creamy cashew nuts from barrel fermentation and maturation. Lingering fruit flavours last well after the last sip. "Elegant and stylish, the inviting bouquet shows ripe apricot, lemon pith, nougat and roasted cashew aromas, followed by a beautifully weighted palate displaying refined texture backed by bright acidity. Splendidly harmonious with complexity, offering fabulous drinking... 93pts" (Sam Kim, Wine Orbit).
Whole bunches of Dandelion Vineyard's best Adelaide Hills Chardonnay were hand picked in the cool of twilight to retain fresh, racing acidity and gorgeous fruit aromas. The free run juice is fermented in stainless steel tanks before spending 9 months in new and first use French oak barriques. The resulting Chardonnay is citrussy, with white peach, nectarine, melon and pear fruit flavours, nderpinned by layers of almond-like pastry and a textural minerality. "An inviting, pale chardonnay, with a subdued nose of melon, white peach, apple pastries and almondy oak. The palate is smooth and seamless with juicy balance and measured barrel influence. It's lifted by tight acidity, emphasising its relatively light, low alcohol personality. The finish is long and mouth-watering... 92pts" (Ralph Kyte-Powell, The Real Review).
For this exquisite 96pt Gold-medal Chardonnay, the winemakers at Bleasdale have looked to carefully cultivated vineyards in Woodside and Echunga, part of the idyllic Adelaide Hills. The Chardonnay fruit was handpicked directly into a refrigerated container, chilled all day and during transport. The fruit was then delivered to the historic Bleasdale cellars at dusk for whole bunch pressing in the cool of the evening. All this culminates in attractive stone fruit and citrus aromas and flavours with complexity from maturation on fermentation lees. The palate is fine and long with persistent flavour supported by oak structure and length. "All the inputs have been precisely managed... 96pts. Great Value" (James Halliday, Halliday Wine Companion).
De Bortoli estate in the Yarra Valley is run by the husband-and-wife team of Leanne De Bortoli and Steve Webber, but owned by the De Bortoli family. Their Section A5 Chardonnay has scored big - between 94-96pts in the Halliday Wine Companion – for virtually all vintage releases over the past 10 years.
