Great value Chardonnay from the ever-reliable Credaro family, who first settled in Margaret River back in 1922. "Elegantly styled and delightfully expressed, the wine shows ripe stone fruit, nougat, lemon pith and oatmeal nuances, followed by a finely flowing palate that's gently weighted and creamy. Inspired by a rag-tag bunch of kids who turned the streets and vineyards of Coonawarra into an endless bike park in the 1980s. A 5000-acre playground with no out of bounds, no helmets and no limits. The ride only ending once the street lights were lit. Whether Sam Brand was a bit of a BMX bandit himself, we're not sure, but he has certainly created a Chardonnay that will get your wheels turning. From the talented hands and refined palate of winemaker extraordinaire John Quarisa comes the Jailbirds Chardonnay. A portion of the wine was fermented in seasoned French oak barrels and matured for 6 months until blending and bottling. Andrew McPherson grew up in the world of wine and went on to work for some top names in Australia before setting up his own independent winery. McPherson Wines have cemented themselves a reputation for quality, efficiency and innovation. For a top twenty Aussie winery, they certainly fly under the radar, but that's the way they like it. It allows winemaker Jo Nash and her team to focus on what really matters – making sophisticated wines like The Full Fifteen Chardonnay. It tastes just as good as (if not better) than many Chardonnays twice the price. A small amount of fermentation in oak has lent The Full Fifteen Chardonnay lovely toasty nuances, a nutty complexity and a soft creamy character. Enjoy it with creamy chicken and a side of charred broccolini.
Many of you will remember Sam Trimboli from his days at Warburn Estate where, every vintage, he’d pick up literally hundreds of awards. He’s still on a winning streak, but now he’s renting space all for himself at a winery in Riverina, New South Wales. Sam makes there the mighty Black Duck, and his white version – the equally fruity and irresistible White Duck. Sam has been in the region for many years, so knows exactly where the best grapes are growing. In 2023, he selected when he wanted them picked too, cool fermenting and adding a touch of citrusy Pinot Grigio to the blend. This is the sort of wine you should never be short of, ready chilled in the fridge. Exuberant with bright melon fruit – serve solo or with a spicy noodle dish.
The Angaston Road Growers range is all about honouring the often unsung heroes of the wine world, the growers. It is their intimate knowledge of the local terroir, the changes of season, and the varietals they tend to that ensure the special parcels of fruit that make it to the winery are in tip-top form to make quality wines like this elegant Chardonnay. It was grown by Mick Gillon, a proud vigneron who works the rich red Terra Rossa soils of the Coonawarra. And when it came to finding the best selection of Chardonnay for this new wine, the Angaston Road winemakers knew instantly to reach out to Mick. His Macvale Chardonnay vineyard is managed organically and is not long off official certification. Mick is also a part-time beekeeper, looking after a friendly hive of pollinators who help during flowering. Once picked, the Chardonnay is crafted and bottled in the Barossa using local glass, capsules and 100% recycled paper labels. Aromas of peach, citrus and toasty oak are reflected on a broad stone fruit, spiced apple and bright citrus palate.
