Beyond the Labels
The many high scores and accolades on show are impressive, but so too the wine heading to your glass. Shiraz includes a Barossa duo of “Big, bold and beautiful” Elderton, and the 7 x Gold blockbuster from Allegiance. There’s the “extraordinary value” Bull Ant from Lake Breeze and 94pt Moss Brothers Fidium, a “lovely wine” from Margaret River’s excellent 2020 vintage. Shiraz also plays a part in two outstanding blends, Paxton’s AAA Shiraz Grenache, and the “delicious” Broad-side from Bleasdale. Straight Cabernet appears in the form of Rob Dolan’s 95pt Yarra Valley White Label release that “sings and excites,” and in Tahbilk’s “terrific value” 2018. A pair of vibrant Tempranillos and two stand-out Malbecs, including a Trophy-winning, 95pt Zonte’s Footstep complete this outstanding selection. Save $144 for 12 – and UNLIMITED members also receive a FREE 92pt Tahbilk Shiraz.
A thoroughly appealing, fruit first Yarra Cab that has won 95pts twice and has been highlighted for its great value too. After 25 years of making wine for some of Australia’s most iconic wineries, Yarra Valley legend – Rob Dolan, made the decision to channel his passion and skill into his own label. Rob’s decades of friendships with the region's top growers gives them access to the premier vineyards of the Yarra Valley. The White Label is their flagship range, and the purple-hued Cabernet is dense with blueberry, dark cherry and mocha on a bed of fine tannins.
From Lake Breeze, Halliday Wine Companion's 'Best Value Winery of the Year 2022', the Bullant Shiraz is their entry-level offering but it delivers "extraordinary value" (Tony Love, Halliday Wine Companion). You have to feel for the vineyard workers who danced amongst the vines avoiding the menacing bull ants who resided there. And this Shiraz has just as much bite. It can partner a cheese plate equally as well as a rare fillet steak. "Deep ruby core, some purpling tints at the rim. Blackberries and bresaola on the nose. Dark fruits open the palate but morphs quickly into an earth and meat savoury tone. Good flow with supple tannins carrying it quite long into a slightly saline finish. Great value here... 90pts" (Stuart Knox, The Real Review). Drinking well now but will age gracefully for the remainder of the decade.
With seven Golds to its name including two Double Golds, and scores between 90-96, this is a delicious Barossa Shiraz that's won plaudits from show judges and critics – and customers too. " Sweetly ripe and perfumed, the wine shows blackberry, dark plum, thyme, clove and roasted nut aromas, followed by a succulent palate that's supple and fleshy. Wonderfully graceful and richly textured with a prolonged delectable finish" (Sam KIm, Wine Orbit).
"A boisterous nose of vanilla, spiced plums and milk chocolate lead into a viscous core of red and black berries. Complexing savoury notes of earth and leather join in too. This is a full-throttle style, vanillin oak adds a layer of flavour and structure. There's freshness, a great feature of this brash full-bodied style of Shiraz which will ensure it ages well" (Gabrielle Poy, The Real Review).
Scoring 91pts at the Royal Adelaide Wine Show, Bleasdale’s classic Generations Shiraz is bang for your buck whichever way you turn. Rich Langhorne Creek fruit, with 22% spending 12 months in new oak. Dark plums and milk chocolate on the nose, with hints of blackberry and cracked pepper. Concentrated fruit flavours on the palate – plum and bramble and hints of vanilla. Vibrant fruit encased in a soft, velvety envelope. With its "moreish and sophisticated" (Halliday) finish, it's perfectly proportioned, a pleasure to drink. . Another triumph from Halliday's Winery of the Year 2024!
An elegant and balanced expression of Margaret River Shiraz. Vibrant red currant and cherry aromas lift from the glass, leading to a palate of juicy sweet red fruits, sweet vanilla, baking spice and a hint of mocha. The Fidium, Moss Brother’s flagship, was matured for 18 months in French oak (30% new). There's plenty of spice here plus a velvety, plush mouthfeel, with fine tannins. Brilliant value here. The lavish Moss Brothers Fidium Shiraz would be perfectly paired with dry-aged wagyu steak and pureed potatoes. " A lovely wine. Jubey" (Erin Larkin, Halliday Wine Companion).
In a textbook vintage, fruit from the Yacca Paddock Vineyard in Kuitpo (In the south west corner of the Adelaide Hills), has produced a juicy, bright Tempranillo of cherry and red berry aromas, with a blue-fruited palate , Ned Goodwin in The Halliday Wine Companion finds it "impressive" So do we – and others. “Deep, bold purple colour, with a youthfully bright spicy and meaty bouquet that hints at carbonic maceration. The palate is rich and fruit-sweet, succulent and delicious, with fine and smooth tannins and fleshy texture. A succulent wine, drinking well now and for a few years hence” (Huon Hooke, The Real Review).
Super generous, fuller-bodied red from Great Southern’s Frankland River. Gentle aromas of blackberries and blueberries (characteristic of Malbec), wafting with sweet spices, dark chocolate, liquorice, blackberry pie and vanilla. Bags of ripe fruits fill the mouth before savoury characters of cacao and liquorice add complexity. It's a seriously dark, intriguing Malbec that's won two Golds and garnered good reviews from critics too."... attractive with excellent weight and concentration, leading to a wonderfully long flavoursome finish... 93pts" (Sam Kim, Wine Orbit). Stuart Knox from The Real Review calls it "A big boy with lashings of black fruit, savoury meatiness and bound with grainy tannins. Good length and drive. Would be best with some serious protein."
Bleasdale Vineyards has almost 175 years of continuous winemaking by the Potts family who still own it. In recent years it has won Best Winery, Best Winemaker and Cabernet Sauvignon of the Years Trophies from the Halliday Wine Companion, plus the Jimmy Watson Trophy among many others. This blend of Shiraz, Cabernet and Malbec brims with dark and juicy fruit and spice, plusvelvety tannins making it a treat to bring to the dining table for hearty dishes of lamb, beef or even pork, and great to continue sipping once the plates are empty.
Juicy, smooth and oh-so-easy to drink, the 94pt Colab & Bloom Tempranillo smells of violets, ripe cherry and vanilla. On the palate there are nuances of dusty earth, rich red fruits, vanilla and sun-baked leather. Grown in David Blows' Macclesfield Vineyard in the picturesque Adelaide Hills. "Offering fabulous fruit purity and perfume, the wine shows sweet plum, blueberry, floral and subtle spice aromas, leading to a succulent palate that's plump and silky. Delightfully composed and expressed, making it comforting and immediately drinkable. At its best: now to 2028." (Sam Kim, Wine Orbit).
Over 160 years of winemaking history underpins Tahbilk and their historic cellars. Tahbilk is a founding member of Australia’s First Families of Wine and they took out the Halliday Wine Companion’s Winery of the Year 2016. The Estate Cabernet is one of their most popular wines and consistently scores well into the 90s year after year – this 2018 is " bright and balanced… Terrific value... " says Jeni Port in the Halliday Wine Companion.
The AAA on the label pays homage to David Paxton’s days in the wool trade and was stamped on the best grades of wool by the Guesser. It is a vibrant blend of Shiraz (55%), Grenache (41%) and Mataro (4%) from special little pockets of the estate. The Shiraz was selected from the ‘Gateway’ and ‘Jones Block’ vineyards, renowned for producing some of the best fruit in the region. These select parcels were blended with complementary Grenache to create a wine that is engaging and approachable. Forest fruits intertwined with raw coffee beans, notes of fresh curry leaves, pine resin and balsamic, along with a feather-light touch of delicate French oak. "cherry, blackberry, dried herbs, floral and bramble. Fleshy and mouthfilling, mid-weight, crunchy red and blue fruits and cedary spice. Firm, chalky tannins and lively acidity rounds the wine out nicel" (Aaron Brasher, The Real Review), Huon Hooke, also in The Real Review adds that it has "good depth and length of flavour. Smart and ageworthy stuff."
Halliday praises its "vibrant freshness" and gives this 95pts plus a Special Value star. "This is bold and robust, showing blackcurrant, tar, cured meat and rich floral aromas on the nose. The palate delivers excellent weight and succulent fruit intensity, wonderfully framed by fine polished tannins" (SamKim, Wine Orbit).
