There are still some sunny afternoons left for lovely Rosé sipping … and these full-flavoured drops go so well with Autumn fare too. Start in WA with an aromatic Pinot Noir-based Rosé from Marchand & Burch, then head to South Australia’s beautiful Clare Valley for Claymore’s rocking Whole Lotta Love Sangiovese Rosé, and the Adelaide Hills for Geoff Hardy’s flavour-packed K1 Durif star. There’s a mouthwatering blend from the lovely Krystallo Estate in Victoria’s Goulburn Valley too – this is a treat. Then, take a trip to France for a gorgeous Grenache-based Provence Rosé and the amazing Roc Clairet – a decadent Merlot-based Rosé. These are delicious – enjoy!
ROC Clairet is part of our Gentle Riot – pioneering wines challenging the norm and sustainably produced. Why? To make a wine that's kinder to the planet and tastes terrific. Clairet is Bordeaux’s unique version of a very deep rosé. Almost red, but one that is so deliciously fruit filled and rounded at the edges that you want to chill it! It’s a style that has almost disappeared. Chai winemaker Jean-Marc took all-Merlot grapes from a vineyard with sustainability at its core. It lies just across the river from St-Émilion, on the finest, pure-limestone soils. What colour! Deep cherry and cassis, rounder and less citrusy than normal pinks, yet totally refreshing. A winner with both red and rosé drinkers solo or try with griddled salmon.
Over the last 20 years, Claymore has developed a reputation for harnessing classic and alternate varietals and producing elegant wines under colourful, playful labels. Early harvested Sangiovese supplied by the winemakers' grower friends is gently pressed for a touch of colour. Light notes of strawberry, lime juice and pink grapefruit on the palate with gentle texture on the finish. Match with a spicy Sichuan mapo tofu and pork mince or barbecued mulloway with chilli and capers.
It's lively, crisp, bright and versatile – brimming with cranberry and notes of watermelon and rose. This is refreshing and pairs well with seared tuna with cracked black pepper or Asian spices or even a Thai curry.
Crafted by highly regarded WA winemaker Nick Bowen and sourced mainly from 20-year-old Pinot Noir plantings at Mt Barker in Great Southern, this Rosé drips with Provence styling, from its pale salmon colour to the lip-smacking tension between savouriness and fruit. Hints of cucumber, red apple skins and raspberries, with a whiff of fairy floss. Elegant, delicate, delicious. “Savoury, fine and textural … and very good... 92pts” (Erin Larkin, Halliday Wine Companion).
Provence is France’s premier rosé region and Domaine de Paris is one of its most stylish and elegant. A previous vintage even gained mention in the prestigious US journal Wine Spectator: “Very good – a wine with special qualities. Dry and refined, with dried berry and cherry flavors and plenty of minerally notes.” The estate has been owned since 1900 by three generations of the Brun family. 50-year-old Syrah and Grenache vines produce fruit of superb concentration and impeccable purity. There’s a tantalising steely freshness, a flinty backbone coupled with wild strawberries and a lovely savoury note. Fine Provence rosé is not just for summer! The locals enjoy it all year round, on its own or with seafood, chicken, fennel risotto or salads.
Crafted from the plump and juicy Merlot grapes of Victoria's Upper Goulburn region, the 93pt Belitso Rosé reflects winemaker Adrian Santolini's skill in crafting pretty cool-climate wines. The grapes were lightly pressed to avoid extracting too much colour from the skins, leading to a delightfully salmon pink Rosé. The juice was fermented in stainless steel, before the wine was filtered and bottled to capture the fresh fruit flavours. Bright red berry aromas and sweet florals emerge after pouring. On the palate, savoury spice, watermelon and a tangy raspberry acidity complete this crisp, textural wine. Enjoy it over lunch with a creamy avocado and crab salad. "This is fabulously styled and fragrant on the nose with watermelon, sweet cherry, apricot and floral aromas. The succulent palate delivers gentle weight and fine flow, leading to an elegantly flavoursome, refreshing finish... 93pts" (Sam Kim, Wine Orbit).
