Enjoy a dozen flamboyant reds and whites that manage to capture the incredible character and fiery spirit of magnificent Spain. These are amazing! There’s Rioja, of course, two of them, both from top estates, and a silky aged Garnacha from Campo de Borja. In whites, enjoy a vibrant Rioja Blanco, an ocean-fresh Albariño and a gorgeously crisp and minerally Verdejo: “Palacio de Menade has a fine, cool vibrancy that will appeal to those who relish Sancerre” (The Guardian). You’ll be all set for a fabulous fiesta with this excellent dozen.
As was noted by The Guardian, “Palacio de Menade has a fine, cool vibrancy that will appeal to those who relish Sancerre.” In fact, just like that famous Loire appellation, Castilla y León has fine chalky soils, ideal for aromatic whites. Although grown here and adored locally for 1,000 years, Verdejo is only now coming to the fore internationally. It's thanks in part to local supremos like the Sanz family. They combine six generations of tradition with state-of-the-art technology to produce Palacio’s breezy, citrus and apricot freshness. Mostly bright Verdejo, with a little Viura (the primary grape for white Rioja), and a splash of Sauvignon for good measure, it's deliciously crisp and the perfect pairing with fresh seafood or paella.
Albariño has fast become a star of fresh white wines. Customers love its crisp, distinctive character. The two prime places to find the grape are in Rîas Baixas, north-west Spain, and just over the border in northern Portugal (known there as Alvarinho). Due to the raging demand for Albariño, our buyer Sarah Everden set out to find you the very best she could. She found gold with Juan Antonio Leza’s daring blend. Leza is a renowned winemaker having worked for a top Rioja winery. Happy to break some rules to make the perfect wine, he crossed borders to craft this white. In truth it’s only ‘rule breaking’ by a stroke of a pen that establishes the national borders. And who cares when it tastes this good? Fresh peaches and nectarine, bright citrus core and elegant minerality. Sea-breeze fresh, 5-star with seafood.
As the late Spanish wine expert John Radford once wrote in Decanter, the tiny enclave of Campo de Borja is “the source of some of the best value wines from Spain, if not the world”. It remains true. Where else could you find such a mellow, complex, oak-aged red at this price? It’s made by our old friend Pamela Geddes at the 500-year-old Bodegas Ruberte. 60% of the wine is Garnacha from vines planted in 1958. They’re not as prolific these days, but the intensity of flavour in the grapes is impressive. The balance is Cabernet Sauvignon, which adds classic cassis character and structure to the spicy, raspberry-rich Garnacha. A rich, velvety-smooth, fragrant Spanish red with vanilla hints imparted by oak. A great choice with lamb or tapas.
The talent behind this contemporary white Rioja is the Murúa family, real movers and shakers in the region. They own Bodegas Muriel in the Rioja Alavesa, a winery established in 1926 by Jose Villaverde, the father of the current owner, Julián. Julián and his son, Javier, have for years made our customers the much-loved red Barón de Barbón. Always a top seller, it's adored for its generous, ripe fruit and value for money. This fresh white is in the same class – no doubt why our customers order it more often than any other blanco. It’s pure Viura, fermented at a cool temperature in stainless steel to capture every single flicker of freshness. Delicate grapefruit, stony lemon, lime and spice notes. You’ll find it delicious served chilled with tapas, barbecued chicken or spicy prawns with noodles.
Everyone loves good Rioja. Now take a step up to Reserva level. This is from the 2017 vintage, officially regarded as 'very good'. A year's ageing in barrel and two in bottle have produced a Rioja of perfect balance and depth. Pagos de Tahola comes from the Chavarri family – Francisco and daughter Ruth form a winning partnership with winemaker Miguel Lopez Nuñez. Their exemplary wines are based on intensely flavoured grapes harvested from mature vines in some of Rioja’s highest vineyards, then infused with the signature fragrance of quality French and American oak. Rich aromas of dried berries and vanilla, red berry and sweet spice flavours and a silky texture. Serve with Spanish style rice dishes, roast chicken or grilled meat.
The supple, ripe Barón de Barbón has remained our bestselling Rioja for many years and loyal customers keep coming back for more. And at such a modest price for old-vine Tempranillo from the superior Alavesa region, you can’t fault its popularity! The Daily Express even claimed on its release that it’s “what true Rioja is all about.” The talent behind this contemporary, fruit driven red is the infectiously keen Javier Murúa. His father Julián owns Bodegas Muriel (a winery Julián's father established in 1926) in Rioja’s superior Alavesa. We’ve known the family well for years now, so much so that Javier calls us up after the vintage so we can get the top pick on their finest vats. With its easy going, ripe red berry flavours and fragrant vanilla character, this supple Rioja is great on its own or with grilled meats or tapas.
