Beyond the Labels
Start in the west with two fine Howard Park Shiraz – one the lavish 96pt Leston Margaret River Shiraz, the other the vibrant 92pt Flint Rock Great Southern Shiraz with a “peppery fruit intensity” (Halliday Wine Companion.) Then, to South Australia for a silky Adelaide Pinot Noir from d’Arenberg, and a luscious Gold-medal Clare Valley Limestone Coast Cabernet from 5 Red Star Taylors. Next, to Victoria for the “classic” (Halliday Wine Companion) Tahbilk Estate Old Vines Cabernet Shiraz and last, NSW’s beautiful Hunter Valley for a fine Tyrrell’s Shiraz. This is a stunning collection you absolutely want in your wine rack. Enjoy.
First Families of Wine Reds Collection Case contents
Established in 1860 and run continuously by the Purbrick family since 1925, Tahbilk is regarded as one of Victoria’s best producers of cool-climate Cabernet and Shiraz. You’ll find a delicious blend of blackberries, blueberries and vanilla here. Herbal and cedar hints from time spent in American and French oak taking that complexity further, with savoury tannins on the finish giving structure. Jeni Port in the Halliday Wine Companion calls it a "classic in many ways", and Huon Hook in The Real Review points out its "spicy and meaty nuances … delicious flavour and mouth-feel, plenty of extract, generous fluffy tannins and a long long finish. Wonderful balance and drinkability.delicious flavour and mouth-feel, plenty of extract, generous fluffy tannins and a long long finish. Wonderful balance and drinkability.”
An appealing glassful to accomapany a range of dishes including game pates and charcuterie. Ned Goodwin MW picks out the sweet cherry and rhubarb among the "loads of flavour" here. 90pts from the Halliday Wine Companion.
This Shiraz boasts a long history of excellence, a rich haul of international medals including having been crowned ‘International Champion’ at the 20th annual VINUS International Wine & Spirits Competition. Bill Taylor, grandfather of the current custodian, Mitchell, first set foot on the estate on the same day that Neil Armstrong first set foot on the moon, in 1969. Three generations later, Taylors has a worldwide reputation for excellence. In fact, Taylors has been rated the ‘No. 1 Winery in the World’, out of over 50,000 producers, by the prestigious World Association of Wine Writers and Journalists. The palate of this 2023 is lavish, with balanced, luscious fruit, spice and oak, with Clare’s trademark blueberry flavours.
An impressive Margaret River release from Howard Park, a distinguished WA estate owned by the Burch family, a founding member of Australia’s First Families of Wines. The Feng Shui cellar door is a ‘must-see’ according to Halliday. With their Margaret River Shiraz they aim – successfully – to combine the ripeness and opulence of warmer climates with the spice and elegance typical of cooler ones. A mouthfilling mix of black and red fruits; boysenberry, cherry, plum, attractive leafy notes, hints of tobacco, spice and black olive. "Splendidly fruited and complex ... offering plump mouthfeel together with delectable fruit flavours and a prolonged velvety finish. 96pts" (Sam Kim, Wine Orbit). "Rich and weighty dark berry fruit, plush and velvety as it flows with an undertone of sweet spices and boudin noir" (Stuart Knox, The Real Review).
Fruit ripeness, power and finesse comes together in Howard’s Park’s Great Southern offering. Pepper and aniseed mingle with brambly dark fruits on the nose. Plums, blackberries and mulberries combine with pepper, bay leaf, tobacco and leather on the palate. 2018 was a great vintage for the region and this has a “ peppery fruit intensity... 92pts” (Erin Larkin, Halliday Wine Companion). “The palate opens with a good punch of blue fruits then rolls into a meaty and graphite-mineral savoury edge. Good flow and fine tannins give the wine a sense of length and focus. A lot to like here at the price... 92pts” (Stuart Knox The Real Review).
Grown on some of the top blocks on the Tyrrell’s estate and surrounding area, which have an average vine age of 40 years and are mostly dry grown. A modern, medium-bodied Australian Shiraz. The nose shows bright red fruits and savoury spice, which follows onto the palate. Primary, bright fruits balanced by savoury nuances, a hint of leather – along with soft, savoury tannins and a crunchy acidity that add to the wines complexity.
