Start with an absolute classic from up north – a juicy Bardolino Classico from close to Lake Garda. Drop by Tuscany for a silky Gold-winning Chianti, with its cherry-fresh Sangiovese from maestro Paolo Masi. Head south to Puglia for a 92pt Primitivo, and a 90pt Riserva from Castel del Monte DOCG in Italy’s heel. Sunny Sicily offers a dark 92pt Nero d’Avola and bright Gold-medal Frappato from Dino Taschetta. Save $61 on the six pack and pay just $19.99 a bottle.

Wine Summary
In 1968 western Sicily was rocked by an earthquake. Such was the devastation, residents of Poggioreale had no choice but to abandon their properties and rebuild further down the hill. Whole settlements became ghost towns overnight. This included Dino’s grandfather’s Nero d’Avola vineyards. 50 years on, Dino set out to recover his grandfather’s lost plot of land. He found it wild and uncultivated, yet producing jewel-like grapes with amazing flavour. In 2017 he made his first ‘revived’ vintage which proved a sensation with customers. It's pure Nero d’Avola, a Sicilian grape, fast becoming a fashionable pick in smart restaurants. Dino’s creation is packed with rich black fruits and spice. A top choice with sausage casserole.

Wine Summary
Deep in southern Italy, Puglia is a haven for authentic, rich reds that over deliver for the price. Our Buyer Leo was particularly pleased to bag this wine – a fabulous, rich, rare Riserva with 10 years' age. The wine is named after its winemaker Leonardo Palumbo. He explained it's a rule of his family that you only put your name on the label of a wine you are really delighted with. He certainly is with this treasure. It's pure Nero di Troia, its thick skins giving it the potential to age. It was matured for a full 18 months in oak barrels for complexity and the rest of the time in bottle. With aromas of ripe berries, violets and star anise, the wine is intensely flavoured with dark fruits and spice. Best with grilled meats or a casserole.

Wine Summary
Tim Atkin MW says Sicily is “now one of the most exciting wine regions in Europe, blessed with a combination of abundant sunshine, varied terroirs, good indigenous grapes.” Plus, it has the investment to make the most of these advantages. This gorgeous Syrah comes from David di Prima, whose grandfather Gaspare planted the vines decades ago. The vineyards lie on high hills overlooking the Lago Arancio (Orange Tree Lake) reservoir. Originally a river, it was dammed in the 1950s. On rare occasions the water level drops to reveal the ruins of a Moorish temple. With deep colour, cherry, spice and chocolate character, this Syrah goes well with grilled red meats and full-flavoured local dishes such as aubergine caponata or cucuzza squash bake.
Il Papavero Primitivo Puglia 2022

Wine Summary
It’s no coincidence the Papavero family of wines are amongst our customers’ favourites – winemaker Scipione Giuliani always manages to capture the very essence of the grape, the spirit of Italy and a delicious drinkability. This is the granddaddy of the group, made purely from Primitivo from a plot of 50-year-old vines, resulting in very concentrated flavour. Scipione discovered the vines in Puglia, and insisted that the grapes be bottled solo. To match the richness of the fruit he aged the wine in barrel for a few months, lending it mellow roundness and complexity. ll Papavero Primitivo is a weighty red, best served with similarly hearty food. Enjoy with spaghetti with tomato, garlic and basil sauce, or with roast meats or pork casserole.

Wine Summary
We've worked closely with the Masi family in Tuscany's superb Rufina district for 30 years now, first with Renzo and now with his son, Paolo. They are like family. In fact, you may well have met Paolo and his wife Anna Rita at our wine shows. They come every year. Paolo took over the family estate in 1990 having passed his wine studies top of the class. And that talent shows in every one of his wines. Their beautiful property lies high on a hill overlooking the Argomenna valley – it's a prime spot for Sangiovese, placed on a par with Chianti Classico since the 18th century. One of his wines even won '3rd Best Wine of Italy' in 2020 and 2021. Enjoy the cherry fruit and silky texture of his great-value Chianti – ideal with chicken or pasta.

Wine Summary
This silky, suave, Italian charmer makes a big impression. It's from the hills of Bardolino Classico, which overlook the town of the same name on Lake Garda and form one of the prettiest wine vistas imaginable. It’s crafted by gifted Daniele Accordini at Cantina di Negrar, awarded Best Italian Cooperative three times! Daniele selected grapes from the Classico's ancient soils, fermenting them to bring out their freshness and fruit. The blend is the same as for the region’s famously rich Amarone wines, although Roccoloro lies at the opposite end of the style spectrum – juicy, light, with fresh red fruits. This wine has redcurrant and ripe cherry flavours with a soft, rounded character and goes exceptionally well with fresh zucchini risotto or ravioli with sage butter. Locally, they often serve it cool with fish.
