A truly dazzling Gold-medal dozen of delicious European wines. And look at the price – a tiny $13.99 a bottle. This is amazing value! Enjoy lavish Gold-medal reds from the sun-blessed south of France (including bestselling Cabalié), a stunning Gold-medal & 91pt Sicilian Nero d’Avola oozing rich, black fruit, a sumptuously dark Portuguese Touriga Nacional with Gold, Gold and Double Gold, and two beauties from Spain – one a twice Gold-winning Gran Reserva that’s now 8 years old; the other (because everyone needs a delicious white in the fridge) the lipsmacking Perla del Mar – a citrus-crisp Gold-medal seafood white you will adore.
If you like BIG Aussie reds, we’d like to introduce you to a wine with the same uncompromising, fruit rich style, but with a distinctly Italian accent. A southern one, to be precise, because Massivo comes from Mediterranean Sicily, where big red fans can enjoy great quality and unbeatable value for money. But this isn’t a Cabernet or Shiraz. It’s a modern take on the traditional local grape variety Nero d’Avola, the swarthy ‘godfather’ of Italian grapes. It boasts a big 14% personality, is impeccably smooth, and has immense depth thanks to the exclusive use of richly concentrated fruit from some of the island’s oldest vines. With bags of flavour and character, Massivo is especially good alongside rich pasta dishes or char-grilled meats.
Perla del Mar is the white sibling to the tasty Perla Negra. It comes from a special coastal vineyard called La Marina, 35 miles from Alicante. The wine’s delightfully fresh and fruity style is thanks to the grape selection (mainly the fragrant and ‘grapey’ Moscatel), the fact that the vineyards are surrounded by sea to the north, south and east, and, finally, to the modern methods of talented winemaker Pamela Geddes. Having been in charge of sparkling wine production for Seppelt in Australia, she knows all about keeping flavours crisp and fruity in warm climates. Perla del Mar is an elegant, refreshing wine with a vibrant, lime zest core and hints of lychee and other tropical fruits. It’s the archetypal summer apéritif – all year round!
Take a minute to read online reviews for Cabalié. This one is typical: “When my time comes to shuffle off this mortal coil, this is the wine I want in that final glass. It is simply, utterly, indescribably fantastic.” Its secret? It’s crafted by the acclaimed Hervé Sabardeil in the ancient vineyard region of Roussillon. Using largely Grenache, with additions of herby blackberry Syrah and floral scented Cinsault, Cabalié has impressive concentration. That’s due to the maturity of the vines, which include some of the oldest Grenache in France. The tiny berries they produce give Cabalié extraordinarily rich, ripe flavours. Boasting 12 medals in five vintages, this now legendary wine is in its element with a slow braised beef casserole.
As Robert Parker says, “Spain leads the world for sensational wine bargains of character and soul” , none more so than its mature reds. Nowhere else produces mellow, barrel aged wines of such remarkable quality and price. Take Palacio del Conde – a gorgeous, complex, oaky 2013 from Valencia. Part of this region is close to the coast, while the more southerly part is inland, up in the hills and very arid. It’s there that winemaker Marta Martínez selects the finest, hand harvested – from 50 year old vines – Tempranillo grapes for this Gran Reserva, then ages the wine for three years in oak barrels. A wonderfully fragrant, silky red with mature redcurrant and strawberry fruit and a rich, toasty character. Sublime with roast lamb or tapas.
Comté Tolosan is an ancient wine producing region within South West France. The Romans were the first to discover its potential. They liked the hilly aspect, planted vines, and made some of their finest wines here. A few centuries ago, wines from Comté Tolosan were more highly rated than those of Bordeaux. They are close to the authentic wines of Gaillac and Cahors too. This is a tasty Cabernet with lovely depth and fruit power made by US winemaker Nicole McPheeters working at a cellar near Toulouse. From Arizona, she’s worked all over the world, including Australia, Chile and Bordeaux. Nicola brings a New World touch to the fruit in this very appealing Cabernet, with its final flourish of vanilla oak. Particularly good with grilled meats.
The word ‘Nacional’ is reserved for treasures that fly the flag for Portugal. Touriga Nacional certainly does that. A decade ago the Freitas family planted the grape on their acclaimed Fava vineyard and it has produced a wine so special that it's won nearly 30 Golds in five vintages and was listed as “Best Portuguese wine” by The Independent. Founded 100 years ago, Casa Ermelinda Freitas is proud to have been run by three generations of women, with the fourth waiting in the wings. The highly awarded Leonor Freitas is in charge today, with her daughter, Joana, not far behind. Our customers can’t get enough of this barrel-aged beauty. With over 1000 5-star online reviews, it’s a much-loved red. Ideal with roast meats or a hearty casserole.
