The Wine
This is a stately, Gold-medal 95pt Barossa Valley Shiraz from “one of the most historically significant winery buildings in the Barossa Valley”. Château Tanunda was established in 1890 and is the site of some of the Valley’s first vines planted as well as its first winery. Its rich history saw it included in the Register of State Heritage Places in 1994, but it had become very badly neglected. After John Geber bought it in 1998, his family spent the next two decades restoring both building and its reputation. Senior Winemaker, Neville Rowe, who specialises in single vineyard reds like this one, has been named in the UK Drink Business Master Winemaker Top 100.
“The single vineyard is in the Vine Vale district, the wine matured for 18 months in French oak. The bright, full colour lives up to the promise of the vintage, the flavours running from red to black, the tannins fine, the texture good. The wine has balance and elegance encountered once in a blue moon with an alcohol of 15.5%... 95pts. Great Value” (Halliday).
