The Wine
For many years, Austrian wines were seldom seen outside the country’s borders – which is the only reason that Grüner Veltliner, the nation’s finest white grape, is not better known. It’s “the best kept secret of the wine world” (Wine & Spirits). This classic example is from a small winery in Krems, a town with 2,000 years of winemaking tradition (noted for its quality by the Roman emperor Probus in 276!). It’s situated on the banks of the famous River Danube where clay and limestone soils “imbue the finest Veltliners with a density all of their own” (Jancis Robinson MW). After hand harvesting, the grapes are gently pressed to extract only the most delicate flavours. With spicy peach and pear fruit and a peppery finish, its perfect with seafood, chicken or spicy Asian cuisine, and great solo, too.
