Wine FAQs
What are Angove’s best-known wines?
Angove Family Winemakers produces some of Australia’s most premium reds and whites, all made using sustainable winemaking methods.
Among their top offerings is Angove Family Crest Shiraz, a bold red with rich blackberry and plum flavours complemented by spice and chocolate aromas. Full-bodied and smooth tannins make this Shiraz an easy-drinking treat, and it’s loved for its balance and complexity.
Another favourite is the Angove Organic Chardonnay, known for its crisp apple and citrus notes with subtle hints of oak. This wine’s clean, refreshing style has won the label awards for its commitment to organic winemaking practices.
The elegant Angove Long Row Riesling is celebrated for its vibrant acidity and bright flavours of lime and green apple. Light and zesty, this Riesling pairs well with fresh seafood and vegetables.
The Angove Warboys Vineyard Grenache is made from the winery’s old vines. Its raspberry and cherry flavours, with floral aromas, add to the medium-bodied wine’s silky texture, reflecting the unique winemaking conditions of McLaren Vale.
Angove Wines also makes a limited amount of rosé wines. Angove Nine Vines Rosé is a refreshing, fruit-forward pink with juicy strawberry and cherry notes. Its bright acidity and lively finish have made it popular among rosé enthusiasts, especially during warmer months.
This vibrant and versatile selection of wines highlights Angove’s dedication to creating expressive wines that honour their rich history and the unique Australian landscape.
What is the history of Angove Winery?
Angove Wines started as a hobby for Dr William Thomas Angove, a doctor who emigrated from Cornwall, England and settled in the Adelaide foothills of South Australia in 1886.
He planted a small patch of vines in Tea Tree Gully, growing grapes to make tonics for his patients. As the number of vines quickly grew, a winery and distillery opened on-site in the early 1900s to process the hundreds of tonnes of grapes.
From 1910 onwards, the winery expanded into New South Wales and McLaren Vale under the management of Dr Angove’s ancestors. A grape processing house was added to the new Renmark site on the River Murray.
Now run by the fifth generation of Angoves, Angove Family Winemakers has become a key player in Australia’s premium wine industry and has helped lead the way towards more sustainable and organic winemaking.
Is Angove Winery sustainable?
The Angove family are considered pioneers of the organic and sustainable winemaking movement in South Australia.
They value their long history in the region and aim to protect it for future generations. This wine label prioritises promoting biodiversity and safeguarding the local environment.
They are committed to eco-friendly practices and do not use synthetic chemicals or pesticides. Instead, they use organic farming methods, like natural compost and cover crops, to improve soil health and encourage biodiversity.
Water conservation is also a priority, so they use efficient irrigation systems to minimise water use and conserve local water resources.
Angove also focuses on reducing its carbon footprint through renewable energy initiatives and sustainable packaging, including lightweight bottles and recyclable materials.
Their efforts reflect a dedication to protecting the environment while crafting high-quality wines, demonstrating that premium quality doesn’t have to be sacrificed for sustainability.
