Where is the Clare Valley wine region?
You’ll find the Clare Valley wine region in
South Australia, about a two-hour drive from the bustling city of Adelaide.
It’s one of Australia’s oldest wine-producing regions, with vines dating back
to the 1840s. The region is best known for producing fine Riesling, but it also
creates superb cool-climate Shiraz.
Thanks to its proximity to Adelaide, the Clare Valley has become a popular tourist destination, celebrated for its charming accommodation, rich history, picturesque countryside, scenic walking and cycling trails – and not forgetting its outstanding wines.
What type of wine is Clare Valley best known for?
Clare Valley has a cool to moderate climate, with a varied elevation making it an ideal wine region for grapes to thrive. Warm days and cool nights extend the growing season, allowing for slow, even ripening. This helps grapes develop intense flavours while retaining their refreshing acidity that adds crispness.
Clare Valley is best known for producing:
- Riesling – Crisp, elegant and complex, with the ability to age beautifully. Clare Valley Riesling can range from dry to off-dry, with intense aromatics of citrus fruits, green apple and floral notes. The palate will have high acidity, with lime, lemon and sometimes green apple flavours and a long, refreshing finish.
- Shiraz – Renowned for its elegance and balance, Clare Valley Shiraz differs notably from wines made from the same grape grown in a warmer climate. Expect cherry, plum and blackberry aromas, with hints of black pepper, clove, leather and tobacco. The palate is often more restrained, with dark fruit flavours and subtle chocolate notes when it’s oak aged. Balanced acidity gives it a wonderful freshness, meaning it’s incredibly food friendly. It also has superb ageing potential.
- Cabernet Sauvignon – Classic Clare Valley Cabernet Sauvignon offers aromas of blackcurrant, cherry and plum, complemented by eucalyptus notes, while oak ageing may lend vanilla or cedar notes. Expect structured tannins, ripe cassis and cherry flavours and a lingering finish. Great for pairing with hearty red meats or aged cheeses.
