Five tips for finding the perfect Christmas wine gift

How do you find the perfect Christmas wine for someone?
Wine makes a great gift at Christmas. It’s classy, but fun. And let’s be honest – an extra bottle never goes amiss this time of year. Plus, you can spend a little or a lot, depending on who’s on your list. But with such a huge variety of grapes and styles of wine available, there are a lot of bottles to choose from.
With that in mind, here are our top tips for choosing the perfect Christmas wine gift:
1. Know their preferences
If you know what wine your recipient likes, that’s always the best starting point. Are they a fan of big bold reds like Barossa Shiraz? Then go for something like Gold-medal-winning The Pastor’s Son – a big, hearty Shiraz in the classic Barossa style – and you’re sure to impress. Or maybe they’re the crisp, elegant Sauvignon Blanc type? Knock their socks off with a bottle of Cape Barren Native Goose – rated 91 points by James Halliday.
But what if you don’t know their preferences? It’s worth putting in a bit of effort to find out. You could ask a friend or relative that might know – or even check in on their social posts to see if they’ve pictured themselves in a restaurant with a special bottle.
2. Choose something to match their personality
If you really can’t find out what they like, you could choose a wine to match their personality. Are they an adventurous, outgoing type, always up for something new? Then go for something they might not have tried before – like RedHeads Coco Rotie. But what if you’re buying for someone who has more traditional tastes? Pick a classic like a Coonawarra Cabernet or a Margaret River Chardonnay. Jim Barry Kirribilli Single Vineyard Coonawarra Cabernet or Risky Business White Knuckle Margaret River Chardonnay would fit the bill perfectly.
