The best wines for Easter
There’s plenty to look forward to at Easter. A proper long weekend, a camping trip before the weather turns and, of course, the perfect excuse to tuck into a chocolate egg or two. But the highlight for wine lovers is a classic lamb roast shared with family, plus a cracking bottle of red to go alongside it.
The Kilikanoon Baroota Reserve Shiraz is a standout choice for the occasion; with its velvety texture, dense black fruit, highlights of spice and a whisper of eucalyptus – it possesses a unique ability to make the savoury richness of a roast sing. It is the kind of pairing that transforms an ordinary lunch into a lasting memory.
So, if you’re on the hunt for your own special bottle – whether that’s a sumptuous red, a crisp white, a refreshing rosé or something to add a little sparkle to your celebrations – we’ve got you sorted.

Top picks for pre-dinner drinks
Sparkling wine is the ultimate all‑rounder. It teams beautifully with pretty much anything, which is why it’s the unofficial starter for Easter get‑togethers right across Australia.
Whether you’re:
- popping a bottle as mates wander in
- taking a slow sip while you put the final touches on your Easter spread
- raising a glass mid egg hunt
- pouring it alongside your long lunch
… there’s no denying that a good glass of fizz adds instant lift. It turns an ordinary moment into something worth toasting. Here are our top picks for your Easter sparkling wine:
- Howard Vineyards Adelaide Hills Pinot Noir Chardonnay – if you want the best, go for this classic vintage Sparkling from Adelaide Hills made with top quality Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.
- Roche Lacour – Made just like vintage Champagne, this Gold-medal French bubbly brims with ripe peach, pear and citrus fruit.
- McPherson’s Bubbly Personality – Looking for an affordable fizz to get the party started? this delicious Sparkling from the McPherson family impresses with its elegance and flavour.

Best wines for a Good Friday seafood feast
There’s no better way to kick off the Easter weekend than a Good Friday seafood feast. Just make sure you get to the fishmongers in plenty of time – so you get the pick of the catch.
Seafood is one of the best opportunities for food and wine matching. Pair a dish with the right white wine and you’ll create something really magical. Here are some of our top wine and seafood pairings.
- Oysters – love them or hate them – oysters, more than any other shellfish, taste of the sea. So you’ll want to pick a wine that has a saline edge. In France, a Muscadet, like Manoir des Herbauges, would be the classic choice. But if you want to go more local, pick an Albariño like Margan Ceres Hill from Hunter Valley. Its peach and grapefruit flavours and tangy mineral edge will go beautifully with the salty flavours of your freshly shucked oysters.
- Prawns – if you’re feeding a crowd, you can’t go wrong with freshly grilled prawns, piled high with lemon wedges, crusty bread and a good dipping sauce. And the wine? Keep it bright so you don’t bulldoze their sweetness. A chilled Semillon is a classic move — all lemony zip and lightness. The Notebook Semillon, from Clare Valley, will hit the spot perfectly.
- Salt and pepper squid – done just right, squid rings are one of the highlights of your seafood feast. They’re delicious with a squeeze of lemon or lime – and you’ll want a wine that has a good bit of citrus zip to it, too. You can’t go wrong with Riesling – like the Knappstein Clare Valley Riesling with its crunchy green apple and lemon pith notes.
- Grilled fish – now for the main event. The catch of the day – barramundi, red snapper or flathead – grilled to crispy skinned perfection. Here you can bring out something really special – like an elegant, oak-aged Margaret River Chardonnay. Evans and Tate Wild Cape Chardonnay, with its bright fruit and buttery richness will make it an occasion to remember.

Best wines for pairing with an Easter lamb roast
If there’s one thing we Aussies do well, it’s a good roast. And at Easter, lamb takes centre stage. Tender, full of flavour and steeped in tradition, it’s a timeless showpiece that deserves a wine with enough character to stand beside it. You could, as I did last year, go for a Shiraz – but there are some other great options too.
Top picks:
- A lighter red – a light-bodied red wine like Pinot Noir will work well with lamb, as its acidity will cut through the fat, letting the fruit shine. Try The Kings Creed from Adelaide Hills, an elegant, nicely poised red that will complement the meal without stealing the limelight.
- Budget choice – Merlot makes some of the silkiest reds you’ll taste – and goes brilliantly with lamb. Caravan Merlot is rich and velvety with luscious dark plum and vanilla flavours – and it’s terrific value, too.
- A GSM blend – did you know that our classic Grenache, Shiraz Mourvèdre blend is based on France’s classic Châteauneuf du Pape? It’s also a perfect match for a lamb roast – with a little more ripe fruit than a straight Shiraz. Try the Black Pig Reserve GSM for a real treat.

Best wine match for Easter chocolate
Is it even Easter without chocolate? We didn’t think so. What other time of year can you unwrap a chocolate egg before lunch and no-one bats an eyelid?
If you fancy a drop of wine to go with your chocolate, here are our top picks.
- Milk chocolate – for a milk chocolate egg, a lighter, fruitier red is the best choice. The Greenstone Ridge Pinot Noir from Victoria is perfect – light, fruity and moreish.
- Dark chocolate – here you want something more robust. To match the richness of the chocolate, try a sparkling Shiraz like Leconfield Syn Rouge. The fizz on the palate will add an extra dimension of luxury to the occasion.
- White chocolate – a sparkling white like McPherson’s Bubbly Personality will cut through the rich creamy character of a white chocolate egg, teeing you up nicely for the next bite.
- Chocolate cake – if you’re ending your Easter feast with an indulgent chocolate cake, choose a full-bodied red like a Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon. Its firm texture will stand up to the richness of the cake, offering a lovely contrast of flavours.
Of course, it goes without saying that the best food and wine pairings are the ones you enjoy most – but if you’re unsure, these suggestions are a great place to start.
