Brothers Richard and Malcolm Leask started Hither & Yon in 2012 – the Old Jarvie label added in 2016. Interestingly each label depicts the ampersand from the name but with a different artist at work with every one. The winery excels in rarer grapes and interesting blends. This Grenache Mataro Touriga a case in point. "All of the fruit for this intriguing blend was hand picked, with a smidgeon of whole bunches in the Touriga. Full bodied, vibrant and alive. Purple florals segue to a juicy mid palate of bergamot, black plum, morello cherry and a thrust of peppery tannins, nicely rendered. The acidity, bright and crunchy. Today it boasts a wide range of good quality wines, and a tasting room, restaurant and event space that cost $3 million. This 2020 Jester Shiraz has several 90+ scores and you will enjoy: "Dark cherry, plum, lilac, iodine, a smear of olive and a trail of peppery freshness. 2005 saw the first vintage of wine bearing the Umamu name, after Charmaine Saw's parents fell in love first with the wines of Margaret River and then these particular vineyards. Charmaine notes that a sense of balance forms the basis of the Umamu winemaking philosophy. Boasting several scores between 91-93, and seven years of maturity this is a Margaret River Cabernet with, as Ken Gargett Wine Pilot writes, "a lot to like. 93pts". “Margaret River sets the scene for this (and similar) blends, rolling out layers of blackcurrant-accented fruit, oak and tannins levers used to shape a full-bodied wine. It has been an exceptional few years for Bleasdale, after winning two of the Australian wine industry's most coveted trophies, Paul Hotker being awarded the Halliday 'Winemaker of the Year 2018', and then, crowned 2024 Halliday Wine Companion Awards – Winery of the Year. The great Langhorne Creek family estate is also, as this "seriously good Malbec" illustrates, "Australia's foremost maker of the variety... A variety with a fine future in these parts, serving up a palette of bright natural acidity and gnarled tannins. Super generous, fuller-bodied red from Great Southern’s Frankland River. Gentle aromas of blackberries and blueberries (characteristic of Malbec), wafting with sweet spices, dark chocolate, liquorice, blackberry pie and vanilla. Bags of ripe fruits fill the mouth before savoury characters of cacao and liquorice add complexity. It's a seriously dark, intriguing Malbec that's won two Golds and garnered good reviews from critics too."... attractive with excellent weight and concentration, leading to a wonderfully long flavoursome finish... 93pts" (Sam Kim, Wine Orbit). Tscharke are leading the way with organic wines that reflect the terroir and the personality of the fruit. In their high scoring Shiraz Shiraz Shiraz, which uses fruit from three separate vineyards in the Barossa sub region of Marananga, they bring to life aromas of blueberry and plum with a vibrant fresh quality, while an underlying gamey and dusty savouriness complements the fruit. The palate is explosive and juicy with cherry, plum and forest berries, supported by hints of spices that stretch into the textural finish. Well balanced structure thanks to the crunchy acidity, full body and fine tannins. It boasts scores of 94 and 92pts.
