Beyond the Labels
Enjoy a dozen full-flavoured reds from top estates across Australia – all with Halliday ratings from 92-95pts. Bring home a bottle each of twelve spectacular drops from top-rated wineries, such as 2024’s Halliday Winery of the Year Bleasdale, who provide their 4x Gold medal Second Innings Malbec. Keep an eye out for silky smooth aged releases such as Rob Dolan’s “elegant” 95pt 2018 White Label Cabernet Sauvignon, and a Limited Edition 2018 Shiraz from Zilzie offering “a smorgasbord of richness from woodsy spices, oak and lots of tannin”. Valued at up to $70 a bottle, save a spectacular $165 and enjoy these premium reds for $17.99.
A thoroughly appealing, fruit first Yarra Cab that has won 95pts twice and has been highlighted for its great value too. After 25 years of making wine for some of Australia’s most iconic wineries, Yarra Valley legend – Rob Dolan, made the decision to channel his passion and skill into his own label. Rob’s decades of friendships with the region's top growers gives them access to the premier vineyards of the Yarra Valley. The White Label is their flagship range, and the purple-hued Cabernet is dense with blueberry, dark cherry and mocha on a bed of fine tannins. "This is what we love to see in Yarra Valley cabernet, an elegance of line, of sweet cassis aromas and varietal intensity..." (Jeni Port, The Halliday Wine Companion).
Brothers Richard and Malcolm Leask started Hither & Yon in 2012 – the Old Jarvie label added in 2016. Interestingly each label depicts the ampersand from the name but with a different artist at work with every one. The winery excels in rarer grapes and interesting blends. This Grenache Mataro Touriga a case in point. "All of the fruit for this intriguing blend was hand picked, with a smidgeon of whole bunches in the Touriga. Full bodied, vibrant and alive. Purple florals segue to a juicy mid palate of bergamot, black plum, morello cherry and a thrust of peppery tannins, nicely rendered. The acidity, bright and crunchy. The oak, nestled nicely into the fray. Very good drinking" Ned Goodwine MW, The Halliday Wine Companion.
Around the turn of the century Frank Mitolo turned his winemaking hobby into a business, inviting legendary winemaker Ben Glaetzer in to make the wines. Today it boasts a wide range of good quality wines, and a tasting room, restaurant and event space that cost $3 million. This 2020 Jester Shiraz has several 90+ scores and you will enjoy: "Dark cherry, plum, lilac, iodine, a smear of olive and a trail of peppery freshness. Thoroughly impressive at the price.” (Ned Goodwin MW, The Halliday Wine Companion).
2005 saw the first vintage of wine bearing the Umamu name, after Charmaine Saw's parents fell in love first with the wines of Margaret River and then these particular vineyards. Charmaine notes that a sense of balance forms the basis of the Umamu winemaking philosophy. Boasting several scores between 91-93, and seven years of maturity this is a Margaret River Cabernet with, as Ken Gargett Wine Pilot writes, "a lot to like. 93pts". “Margaret River sets the scene for this (and similar) blends, rolling out layers of blackcurrant-accented fruit, oak and tannins levers used to shape a full-bodied wine. Cassis, licorice and plum are all there to be had. 92pts” James Halliday
It has been an exceptional few years for Bleasdale, after winning two of the Australian wine industry's most coveted trophies, Paul Hotker being awarded the Halliday 'Winemaker of the Year 2018', and then, crowned 2024 Halliday Wine Companion Awards – Winery of the Year. The great Langhorne Creek family estate is also, as this "seriously good Malbec" illustrates, "Australia's foremost maker of the variety... " as James Halliday writes awarding it 95pts and calling it "Exceptional Value" too. To back up this enthusiastic review it also boasts FOUR Golds including a prestigious TOP Gold. Enjoy "rich, velvety plum and blackberry fruits, supported with amiable tannins". (Halliday).
From the broad range of d'Arenberg's extensive range, here's a very appealing Montepulciano with 92pts. “This is good. A variety with a fine future in these parts, serving up a palette of bright natural acidity and gnarled tannins. Floral, full weighted and pulpy, yet far from simple as a salve of smoked meat, dried tobacco, olive, iodine, clove and thyme is fired by a parapet of ferruginous tannin and integrated acidity. The finish, long and effusive with no excessive heat or dryness. A beacon of light. Great Value.” Ned Goodwin MW
Scores of 91pts, 92pts and a star for Special Value point to the quality of this straight Cabernet Franc from the ever-impressive Pikes of the Clare Valley.“Bright and fresh style with good balance of brambly herbal character, pepper and dark plummy fruit, with suggestions of black olive and some more ferrous, earthy elements. Bold perfume, more sleek and almost crisp... Long strides of tannin, and there's a freshness through the finish. This is really pleasing.” Mike Bennie, The Halliday Wine Companion. The Wine Team here certainle agree with Mike. Very pleasing indeed!
Super generous, fuller-bodied red from Great Southern’s Frankland River. Gentle aromas of blackberries and blueberries (characteristic of Malbec), wafting with sweet spices, dark chocolate, liquorice, blackberry pie and vanilla. Bags of ripe fruits fill the mouth before savoury characters of cacao and liquorice add complexity. It's a seriously dark, intriguing Malbec that's won two Golds and garnered good reviews from critics too."... attractive with excellent weight and concentration, leading to a wonderfully long flavoursome finish... 93pts" (Sam Kim, Wine Orbit). Stuart Knox from The Real Review calls it "A big boy with lashings of black fruit, savoury meatiness and bound with grainy tannins. Good length and drive. Would be best with some serious protein."
Excellent 95pts, Gold McLaren Vale Shiraz, which “has muscle, but it also has a core of ripe, plush fruit. It offers a smorgasbord of richness from woodsy spices, oak and lots of tannin… an appealing savoury edge” (Jane Faulkner, The Halliday Wine Companion). Makes impressive drinking.
There is unsurprising complexity in the wealth of flavours and additional 'extras' in this unusual blend of Shiraz, Grenache, Mataro and Cabernet. Ned Goodwin MW The Halliday Companion calls it "Effortless drinking” complimenting its blue and red fruit and notes of herb and tobacco. He's not alone in praising the blend: “Deep, darkly red/purple colour. The bouquet shows meaty, earthy and subtly spiced dark plums, the palate rich and dense, with thickness of texture and a trace of chew on the finish. A more savoury style and a worthy contrast to its stablemate Shiraz Mataro.” Huon Hooke, The Real Review. Inventive and satisfying.
Tscharke are leading the way with organic wines that reflect the terroir and the personality of the fruit. In their high scoring Shiraz Shiraz Shiraz, which uses fruit from three separate vineyards in the Barossa sub region of Marananga, they bring to life aromas of blueberry and plum with a vibrant fresh quality, while an underlying gamey and dusty savouriness complements the fruit. The palate is explosive and juicy with cherry, plum and forest berries, supported by hints of spices that stretch into the textural finish. Well balanced structure thanks to the crunchy acidity, full body and fine tannins. It boasts scores of 94 and 92pts.
From “One of the stalwarts of the Clare Valley, established by Jane and Andrew Mitchell”. “As it always is, this is a popular release, offering value and flavour… a fine Clare Shiraz. Good concentration, poised balance and excellent length. 93pts” (Ken Gargett Wine Pilot).93pts from the Halliday team too “…feels 'fine wine' zone … very enjoyable now. 93pts. Great Value” (Mike Bennie, The Halliday Wine Companion).
