Here’s an exceptional mix of premium reds that will definitely impress, in a range of styles and varieties. There’s Barossa Shiraz, of course, from the great Thorn Clarke Estate, and in Cabernet you’ve Michael Fragos’s divine Chapel Hill The Prophet from McLaren Vale. There’s a tasty Adelaide Hills Tempranillo treat and gorgeous McLaren Vale GSM, both from Rob Dundon and his Cape Barren winery, a scintillating Langhorne Creek Sangiovese from the Marauding Vintners and last, the lovely Coco Rôtie from RedHeads – a Rhône style red (but with lashings of McLaren Vale flavour) that our customers adore.
Thorn-Clarke is one of the largest family-owned wineries in Barossa, and as Halliday notes: “The quality of. grapes retained for the Thorn-Clarke label has resulted in a succession of Trophy and Gold medal-winning wines at very competitive prices.” “47/23/20/10% cabernet sauvignon/malbec/cabernet franc/merlot, matured 12 months in French oak barrels. A characterful and ageworthy blend in which malbec and cabernet franc play more than a support role.... The crunchy redcurrants of cabernet uphold a bright, tangy core of freshness and integrity, holding long through an even and enduring finish. One for the cellar... 93pts” (Halliday Wine Companion, Tyson Stelzer).
Michael Fragos grew up in McLaren Vale, and spent 14 years at Tatachilla before taking over at Chapel Hill in 2004. Endless titles and Trophies worldwide followed. A three-time ‘Bushing King’, Michael was named best winemaker on the planet at the world’s biggest wine show and Halliday notes his “wine quality is unfailingly excellent”. This McLaren Vale heavyweight is divinely good and shows Michael’s wonderful handiwork at its very best. It brims with deep blueberry, mocha, dark olive and liquorice with a lovely mouthfeel, the fruit and tannins all in perfectly pitched harmony.
A cheeky Rhône style red from cult wine studio RedHeads, full of lavish fruit and spice. A real red fruit basket – raspberry, pomegranate and distinctive notes of orange peel. Think of this impressive, cheeky nod to the luxurious reds of France’s northern Rhône Valley as a Barrel Monkey’s Reserve – the monkey on the label’s no coincidence.
Approximately only 181 cases of this tasty little McLaren Vale Sangiovese have been produced, an exciting new addition to the Marauding Vintners range. McLaren Vale is the home to many exciting alternate varieties, especially traditional Italian and Spanish ones. Sangiovese may traditionally be an Italian grape, but it has done well in the Mediterranean-like climate of the Vale. It has enjoyed its time in the sun and has emerged as a beautiful red wine expressing red fruits, subtle hints of mocha and layered with well integrated tannin that'll take on any plate of cured meats.
Produced from vineyards selected for their consistently exceptional quality, these old-world vines produce wine of a lushly complex quality. A fresh and fragrant bouquet exhibits a mix of dark forest berries with plum on a spicy backdrop of crimson-purple hues. A medium to full bodied red with structured layers of spice and dark chocolate.
Cape Barren Wines was established in 1999 by Peter Matthew. Since 2010, the business has been in the talented hands of winemaker Rob Dundon who has been making fine wine for over 40 years. His Tempranillo is a richly appointed, beautifully complex drop which will impress with its many layers of flavour. It's brilliant with roast lamb.
