McLaren Vale old vine Grenache with a raft of high scores up to 95pts from the impressive Curtis family. “The Small Batch program here throws up some gems on occasion and this is one of them. McLaren Vale Grenache from 120-year-old bush vines was always going to be exciting… a soft and supple style with notes of raspberries and strawberries, freshly turned earth, smoked meats, animal skins and hints of root vegetables… this is very attractive. Lots to like. 93pts” (Ken Gargett, WinePilot).
For Sam Kim Wine Orbit, this is: "…a beautifully seductive interpretation of the variety… concentrated and succulent offering impressive richness and beautifully balanced tannins. It is both sturdy and refined with a persistent, satisfying finish. 95pts"
Marcus Ellis, writing in The Halliday Wine Companion admires its: "…assertive minerality and old-vine gravitas to this, with notes of iron, crushed rock, dried rose, caraway and old leather. Within lie bright red fruits with a brush of Mediterranean herbs, warmed earth and a hint of musk.93pts."
It comes from a family that can trace its history back to 1499! Paolo Curtis was appointed by Cardinal de Medici to administer Papal lands in the area around Cervaro. (The name Curtis is believed to derive from Curtius, a noble and wealthy Roman Empire family.) The family came to Australia in 1953, and has been growing grapes and making wine in McLaren Vale since 1973.
