Ex-Head RedHead, Alex Trescowthick has tamed another elusive black beast of sorts – Pinot Noir. The Bogie Panther exudes wild strawberry, cherry and savoury, earthy spice. "It’s probably an exaggeration to say that Alex Trescowthick knows each of his pinot noir grapes by name – but not that much. The archetype of the small-batch winemaker with a myopic focus on a couple of varietals, Trescowthick can’t stop eulogising about the concept of “pinot with character” – even though he knows his heart will be broken at times along the way. Having made vintages in wineries big and small, Trescowthick is in his happy place getting hands on with small parcels – including pinot grapes from his parents’ vineyard in the Strathbogie Ranges, or at least when the crop is worthy of it. The result is redolent of boutique Aussie pinot, happily reflective of the vintage, the climate, the region and the vineyard – full of personality that will change with the season."
