The Wine

This bright, elegant, white pepper-laced delight, was crafted at iconic 5 Red Star Tyrrell’s estate in the Hunter Valley. However, the fruit is from the 'top tip', tip-top region of Heathcote. Mark Richardson, red specialist at Tyrrell’s calls Heathcote “undoubtedly Australia’s most exciting new red wine producing region.” Buying up vineyards here was the brainchild of Bruce Tyrrell – and it has yielded a few reds, including this exclusive that win huge numbers of loyal fans every year. "Sight the bright purple colour in your glass, and there’ll be no surprise in a nose with notes of blackberry, bramble and plum, with sprinklings of vanilla, white pepper and dried herbs. Drink in the ripe red fruits and vanilla on the palate, and enjoy the fresh acidity and velvety, mouth-filling texture." (John Lehmann, The Australian).

John Lehmann explains that "Bruce’s Heathcote connection began just over three decades ago, when his sister Ann offered him a glass of the Hanging Rock shiraz she had made with her husband Bob Ellis from their Heathcote grapes. Bruce takes up the story, “My old man and I looked at each other and went, ‘How good is this?’, I realised it’s a reliable climate, there's reliable water, all of the things we don't have in the Hunter. It's lovely soil too, there's about 40-foot of it in the best places.”

The secrets of Heathcote lie in the unique strip of Cambrian soil, forged over 500 million years – resulting in rich dark berry fruit and trademark white pepper spice for which the region is famous.
