Well, when you visit Elderton in the Barossa Valley, you’ll find out, because the Cellar Door is the grand 1918 classic gentleman’s bungalow that Neil and Lorraine Ashmead bought as their family home. Surrounded by Elderton’s iconic vineyards, the magnificent homestead now provides the perfect welcoming atmosphere for your special Vineyard Partner visit. Look out over the 1894 Command vineyard from the verandah with a glass of wine and a platter, enjoy the sunshine on the lawn, or get cosy by the open fire during winter. Barossa Valley bliss!
The Estate
The Elderton estate was first planted on the banks of the North Para River in Nuriootpa in 1894 by the Scholz family. In 1916, it was purchased by Samuel Elderton Tolley who built a homestead, gave the estate its Elderton name, and sold fruit to his family’s winery. It was run successfully for many years, but became derelict in the early years of the vine pull. Neil and Lorraine Ashmead rejuvenated the vines and the house, and created the iconic Elderton Wines. Today, the estate is run by the second generation, Cameron and Allister Ashmead with their families. The Shiraz blocks on the Elderton Estate, some as old as 100 years, grow in deep alluvial soils over limestone. Combined with a Mediterranean climate and minimal supplemented irrigation, they create the conditions for lusciously rich and intense Barossa Shiraz – the type that made the region famous.
