Jim Barry started his illustrious career at the Clarevale Cooperative in 1947 where he spent 22 years. As Halliday says, though it was “decidedly unfashionable”, it had a huge attraction. It put Barry “into the minds and hearts of grapegrowers in the meandering valley, with its hidden pockets of special vines growing in special soil”. These single vineyards are still the key to the finest Jim Barry wines being made today. The Barry family believe that great wine is made in the vineyard and are firm believers in owning their vineyards. This allows them to develop outstanding fruit quality and flavour and maintain complete control over the winemaking.
