RedHeads by name … GreenHeads by nature
RedHeads pride themselves on their sustainability, and in March 2022 they received NASAA Organic Certification. As they like to say, they’re RedHeads by name, but GreenHeads by nature! Here are just some of their sustainable and environmentally friendly efforts:
• They collect and re-use as much wastewater and rainfall as possible.
• They re-wired the winery and cellar door so that everything is run from solar and battery.
• They have a beehive on-site to pollinate the vineyard.
• They source locally wherever possible. The sheet metal for the winery was manufactured close by, the glass for their bottles is locally produced, and even their coffee beans are from a roaster just 5km down the road.
• They send their waste grape skins and seeds to the local distillery down the road, and the stalks are recycled into garden compost and to feed the local sheep. Minimal waste all round!
The Estate
It was nearly 30 years ago that Tony Laithwaite and his son Tom helped set up the RedHeads Wine Studio in an old restaurant in McLaren Vale. He kept meeting enthusiastic, young gun winemakers who mystically had access to tiny parcels of AAA prime fruit which they wanted to craft into small-batch, character-laden wines. Their motto? Don’t buy famous wines; buy the grapes that make them. (Turns out this was achieved by buying the growers a few beers at the local pub!) Tony was keen to encourage them, and with no rules to adhere to, these talented winemakers produced astounding wines that dazzled the critics. These days, RedHeads has much larger premises, but it has been uniquely designed to produce small batch fermentations, just like they did in the old days. So their method hasn’t changed. They just have a lot more grape grower drinking mates and a lot more room to play with. And their wines are still as bold, brash and uncompromising as the originals.
