Black Friday occurs each year the day after the American Thanksgiving holiday. Since Thanksgiving is celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November, Black Friday typically falls between November 23rd and 29th. As Black Friday falls so close to the start of December, it has become widely considered the unofficial beginning of the festive shopping season – and the perfect time to stock up on wine deals ahead of the Christmas holiday (and our Black Friday wine sale is a great place to start). This festive shopping spree is believed to have got its name from the retailers’ strategy of enticing shoppers with significant price reductions over the extended Thanksgiving weekend to put their accounts ‘into the black’, marking the start of when retailers start making a profit during the year.

Despite only having one day in its name, Black Friday is actually a four-day event. This extended shopping weekend starts on Friday and ends on Monday, which has become known as Cyber Monday. Not all online retailers participate throughout the whole Black Friday weekend; however, they typically offer exclusive, last-minute deals on Monday as a push to encourage shoppers.

Cyber Monday is the final day of the Black Friday four-day weekend, right after Thanksgiving in the US. It has become one of the busiest online retail days of the year, with online retailers offering exclusive price cuts to kick off the festive shopping season. “Cyber Monday” was coined in 2005 to encourage shoppers as a last chance to take advantage of online deals and discounts.
