Beyond the Labels
Savour delicate whites and rich reds from across the globe, from Chilean champions to Spanish stars. Each of these twelve wines is a Gold or Double Gold medallist, hailing from fabled old world regions and heavyweight new world contenders. Look out for the spectacular EIGHT-time Gold medal winning La Bella from Spain’s Campo de Borja, plus two-time Double Gold winner Pillastro Primitivo from Italy’s Puglia. Each of these wines is an irresistible glimpse of some of the world’s most exciting wine regions, with superb savings of $110.
Jean-Marc Sauboua was born and raised in the heart of Grand Cru Bordeaux and has a book filled with useful contacts. He’s a winemaker too (trained at Château Haut Brion) as well as a top Bordeaux Buyer, hence both the great quality and value of this juicy claret. Plus, it’s from a lovely ripe vintage. Jean-Marc tasted his way through a few dozen vats of wine to pick out the very best. He then helped the winemaker put a blend together that had just the right balance of forward ripe fruit and silky tannins to make this a great-value early drinking and Gold-winning Bordeaux. There’s no rush either. For now, Jean-Marc suggests pouring into a jug to aerate the wine. Then serve with midweek suppers – shepherd’s pie, chops, butter bean casserole. It’s versatile!
Founder Señor Andrés Ruberte began making wine from the gnarled old bush vines of his 25-hectare estate in Campo de Borja in 1978. Skip forward to 2017 and the estate under the husband and wife team of Miguel Salvador and Susana Ruberte was named the “BEST WINERY IN ARAGÓN.” Around 500 years ago, local farmers began to carve vast caves into the side of the Moncayo Mountain next to the winery. To this day, several are still in use as refuges for their owners from the intense Summer heat. As the owners proudly report: "Ours is the only such cave in the area that continues to serve its original purpose and although the original oak barrels have since been replaced, the mountain walls hold firm and still provide the ideal cellar for our finest barrel-aged wines". La Bella is a velvety blend of Garnacha, Syrah and Tempranillo crafted by Scottish-born, Spanish expert winemaker Pamela Geddes. It's 100% barrel aged in French oak, lovely and smooth now with six years of aging in barrel and bottle and a treat served alongside roast lamb. Oh, and it also boasts EIGHT Golds including a rare Great Gold and a Double and high scores of 90-92pts.
Good old South African friend Bruce Jack (winemaker at Flagstone estate), called Gerhard Swart "the best winemaker I have ever met" – high praise indeed from someone with a lot of talent himself. With the 2010 General Smuts Trophy under Gerhard's young belt, Winemaker of the Year in 2017, 5 Stars from John Platter and many other impressive awards, it's perhaps of no surprise. Gerhard's thirst for knowledge means he's always looking for ways to improve and produce something new and exciting. Crush magazine wrote "What makes him truly exceptional is understanding the language of grapes from vineyard to cellar." You can taste that in this gooseberry-fresh, tropical-infused Sauvignon Blanc. Chill it down and enjoy with a seafood platter, friends, and a sea view if you can!
Pecorino is a little known white grape of Abruzzo, a region on Italy's eastern, Adriatic coast. Why this variety isn't better known is a mystery, when it has such lovely ripe apricot fruit and character. This is a delightful Gold-winning white from Rino Santeusanio, who gained New World experience in South Africa, New Zealand and Argentina, before returning home to the Abruzzo. He picked out premium grapes and cool fermented them at the cellar to bring out all the juicy, fresh flavour of this variety. The name Pecorino comes from the Italian word Pecore, for sheep. These animals love to guzzle on the ripe Pecorino grapes, if you let them! Chill this wine down and enjoy alongside roast chicken, creamy soups, grilled fish or vegetable risotto.
With the first release of this wine 25 years ago, we showed judges and consumers alike that Bordeaux whites could combine France's classic elegance and freshness with vibrant fruitiness. That was a novelty back then. And so it won the International Wine Challenge ‘White Wine of the Year’. A quarter of a century later Haut-Brion trained winemaker Jean-Marc Sauboua gets no less excited about his pride and joy – personally earmarking the best grapes from Sauveterre in the Entre-Deux-Mers and supervising every step of production. The result is a deliciously appetising white, with a perfect balance of grassy freshness, lemon zip and light tropical fruit. Equally appealing as a glass on its own as it is with fish, salads or spicy noodles.
The buzz of bees is music to the ears of grape growers. Because where there are bees, there are healthy vines and pristine grapes. Leon Esterbuizen pays tribute to these essential vineyard workers with this velvety Shiraz, Mourvèdre, Grenache blend. The grapes come from the hardy Swartland wine region – a hilly, dry area that's fast gained a name for quality. Nearly half were taken from old bush vines, which produce fruit of excellent concentration and all were handpicked, in the cool of the night for freshness. Whole bunch fermentation and wild yeasts means a gentle touch in the cellar and more layers of flavour. It’s as smooth as its name would suggest, with layers of ripe berry fruit, herb and spice notes. Great with bangers and mash.
This plump, juicy-fruit, Double Gold Merlot is made by Trophy-winning winemaker Nicolas Bizzarri. He heads the cellar team at the leading, family-owned Luis Felipe Edwards estate in the premium Colchagua Valley. Luis Felipe Edwards Snr started his wine estate in 1976, beginning with a small plot of land and slowly buying up more vineyards. Today he owns an entire valley and a thoroughly modern, fully equipped cellar. He really has spared no expense over the years (even installing chandeliers in the barrel cellar), but has always kept that quality-focused, family-run touch to the business. His reds are renowned for both great flavour and value and have won many top international awards. Tasty as a glass solo, this Merlot is very versatile with food too.
One major UK newspaper named Rocksand Shiraz among its ‘12 Best Portuguese Wines’, giving it the title of ‘best for a meat feast’! The secret to its luscious weight and fruit-packed splendour is the sandy soils, which hold little rain for the vines, plus the unrelenting hot sun of the Setúbal Península. The result is a very modest yield of small berries crammed with juicy flavour and spice. No wonder, then, award-winning winemaker Jaime Quendera is now forging a worldwide reputation for Setúbal’s rich, bold reds, all at affordable prices, too. A few months' ageing in French oak barrels has lent a gorgeous, spicy, vanilla lift to its wealth of ripe black fruits. A fine, Gold-medal treat to serve with spicy chorizo sausages, a hearty stew or the Sunday roast.
Puglia offers “undreamed-of character and potential” (Hugh Johnson) and “reds that give you a lot of wine for your money” (Decanter), yet even in this context Pillastro Selezione d’Oro stands out. It's the work of Angelo Maci, a champion of the region, who started the Cantine Due Palme cellar in the 1980s to save the growers and the region's traditions. Since then Cantine Due Palme has been Winery of the Year three times, while Angelo Maci has multiple Winemaker of the Year titles and a Lifetime Achievement award. This premium edition takes grapes from 50-year-old vines to add even greater depth of flavour. Ageing in French oak barrels adds spice to this complex rich, dense fruit red. Decant and serve with roast meats or a rich pasta dish.
The 2020 vintage of this cracking white scored 91pts from James Suckling, who loved its "attractive fruit and delicious finish." We think you will too in this most recent 96pt release with recent Trophy and Gold medal wins at IWC. It's from Serrada in the heart of Rueda and a third-generation family estate, who completed a new winery in 2005. The team go to great lengths to ensure the wine retains maximum fruit and freshness. Night harvesting is essential in a region where daytime summer temperatures reach 35° (even at 700 metres altitude) and drop 20° at night to a chilly 15°. Cool fermentation and three months ageing on its fine lees is the perfect recipe for this characterful white, zippy and citrusy fresh, yet with rounded creamy weight too. A great apéritif; top with seafood.
