Beyond the Labels
Brimming with satisfying fruit flavour and utterly dependable – these are reds you’ll want on hand to sip alone or share with friends and family. There’s delicious Shiraz in the fragrant Smuggler and rich Barrel Monkeys from McLaren Vale, plus Langhorne Creek’s character-filled Chairman Shiraz. Dark and impressive Coonawarra Cabernet from Leconfield sits next to the great John Quarisa’s Gold-medal Caravan Merlot – and last but by no means least is The Old Red River Gum – a delicious combo of Cabernet and Shiraz, which won Gold for the 2019 vintage last year – and tops it in this new 2020 by picking up Gold – and a TOP TROPHY!
The name of this exciting new Shiraz gives a nod to a colourful footnote in the rich history of the Hamilton winemaking clan. Before Richard Hamilton emigrated to Australia in 1837 to establish South Australia’s first commercial vineyard, he had run a well-known tailoring business in the UK Port of Dover. His interest in wine had also led to a sideline business of ‘importing’ French wine from over the English Channel – under the cover of darkness! Five generations on, Dr. Richard Hamilton owns the estate and he and chief winemaker Paul Gordon maintain the family tradition of excellence. Shiraz vines for The Smuggler grow just 10km from the sea – so as well as intensely flavoured dark and spicy fruit, the wine displays wonderful freshness too. It has gone down a storm with wine writers – and customers who have tasted it.
A luscious Gold-medal Merlot from the great John Quarisa. It's smooth and complex, with velvety black forest fruits and a juicy plummy note. The palate is silky and lovely. It’s a brilliant partner to pan-fried lamb cutlets. John Quarisa’s lovely Caravan Petite Sirah has become a cult-classic with our customers. But will his velvety Merlot knock the Petite Sirah off its perch?
Ever fancied working in wine? First step, become a cellarhand! During vintage, wineries need all the help they can get, and getting a job as a cellarhand is easy. Being a cellarhand however (or a ‘barrel monkey’ as they are fondly called) is very hard work! Scrambling over barrels, dragging heavy hoses around, cleaning out two tonne fermenters – it’s not for the faint-hearted! And neither is this wine, named in honour of these hard workers. It’s a BIG full-flavoured red that will definitely impress.
This top Cabernet comes from a fifth-generation winemaker whose ancestors planted some of the first vines in South Australia in 1837. Halliday calls Leconfield “a distinguished estate with a proud history, long renowned for its Cabernet” . Look for mint-edged aromas of blackcurrant, dark plum and wild herbs on a beautifully balanced palate.
It’s wine like this, made using fruit from premium sites throughout the region, that makes South Australia a first choice destination for lovers of big, generously rich and velvety Aussie reds - consider it the state’s great gift to the wine world, not just at home but all over the globe. This red shows distinctive characters of black fruit, eucalypt and spice, smoothed out by delicious dark chocolate and a touch of smoky oak.
