Mention Coonawarra and its cigar-shaped strip of terra rossa soil immediately springs to mind. From this prized soil comes world-class, ageworthy Cabernet Sauvignon. The climate here is relatively cool thanks to breezes from the Southern Ocean, so grapes are slow to ripen, adding depth and power to the fabulous wines. Yet, it’s not only Cabernet that excels in Coonawarra – Shiraz is also a star, lime-crisp Riesling, vibrant Chardonnay, plus a little Merlot and Cabernet Franc.

Drive almost 400km south from Adelaide or 427km west from Melbourne and you’ll land in the prized Coonawarra wine region. It’s part of South Australia’s premium, ocean-cooled Limestone Coast with Wrattonbully and Padthaway wine regions just north of it.
