Surrounded by water, Tasmania enjoys a much cooler climate than mainland Australia – ideal for grapes with purity, freshness and finesse. Pinot Noir thrives here (accounting for nearly half of all plantings), along with Chardonnay, both of which produce beautifully elegant wines.

Unlike much of the mainland, acidity isn’t an issue – making the fruit ideal for top-quality sparkling too (this accounts for 38% of Tasmania’s wine production). You’ll also find small amounts of Riesling and Cabernet Sauvignon.

Tasmania is an island just south of the state of Victoria and the bustling city of Melbourne, with the Indian Ocean to the west and the South Pacific to the east. Its climate is notably cooler than mainland Australia. Most vineyards are clustered around Launceston in the north and Hobart in the south, all planted on the drier eastern side of the island.
